Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

A note to current students and prospective students reading this forum

I just want to give you a perspective from an adviser since you're basically reading all the dirty laundry here.

Yes you have dissatisfied unsatisfied employers working at ITT Tech trash talking the environment, the curriculum, the company, the way things operate etc etc. But do not be s---ed into such talk. These people should not even be working there if they feel that way. These are what we call the "know it alls" and they are everywhere. Yes even as adults.

As for my point of you. You guys are awesome. And it is because of you that we all have jobs. I for one can tell you that every time I interview a student it is a chance for me to get to hear your personal stories, background and motivations. It is exciting to know that the person in front of me wants to change their life and I am the one that can potentially help you with that.

I can also tell you that when we go back to our room full of advisers we each talk about how we love our students and how we hope you'll follow through on your commitments. It is that bond we form during the interview that helps us get through the day and helps us to in turn be your cheer leader throughout your time here at ITT Tech.

It's an honor to speak with you because for me personally, it inspires me to improve my own life and to get better at helping students because we are the ones that you speak with first. So I take my role seriously.

And so I ask that you hang in there while the higher ups take control of this situation and clear the air with the DOE, should it happen. We are right there with you! Not everything you read here is accurate. Take it with a grain of salt. The fact is, it's all speculation. So again, hang in there with us as we all await an answer. This is an excellent school with some great hands on approach methodologies that can prepare you to be successful in the Work place. I have heard of many success stories of my own students I have recruited that are very happy where they work. Its all how you use what you learn. Remember that. And that goes for anywhere you attend.

All the best to you student.

Well, thanks for the longer than required BS statement. I have personally attended staff meetings where there was no love expressed for students, only disdain.

My experience has been that ITT largely admits students who are ill-prepared to meet the rigorous challenges of nursing. When compared with students I have taught from other colleges, ITT students largely fall short. It is about the money with this organization. I am truly heartbroken for my nursing students who have worked so hard and put forth so much work...only to have their foundation crumble beneath their feet. I fear that some will not continue due to disappointment and prolonged strain on their families.

Your post is exactly why Kool-Aid drinking is mentioned so often. The whole "helping students" mantra that you were spoon fed was designed to make you feel better about being driven so hard to make your numbers.

Academic staff are far more likely to engage in critical thinking and generally didn't swallow that kind of nonsense. If that made them seem like "know it alls" to you then maybe the real problem is that you didn't open your eyes and ears to what was really going on.

Current and PROSPECTIVE students??? Are you mad? There will be no more students for ITT to cheat.

Maybe if the "representatives" had talked more to the teaching staff they might have learned a little of the concerns that teaching staff had. There were no real requirements to be a "representative" but the teaching staff all had to have degrees and/or certifications. In many cases Master level degrees were required for academic staff. Skepticism of ITT Tech's method was rife in the academic department. Typically we would smile sweetly at the idiot director, close the door and discuss how ridiculous HQ's expectations were.

Well from my many years with ITT, I can say that some of the recruiters really, truly, did show a personal interest in having " their" students succeed, with the program and it was not fakery. On the other hand, I found some these same recruiters did not always grasp the full story of what was happening in academics. In their "itt-training" view, all of our programs were super-top notch and grads always got great jobs, so reps felt like they were really helping someone. They knew ITT as "over the top" in having them call leads endlessly, so on the other hand they could see HQ was interested in quantity.

On the academic side, students just "showed up" to an instructor's class like they walked out of the woods, ready to learn. Many instructors (my self included) did not realize \ that these students were called over & over again in a complex mutli-visit scripted enrollment process. We never saw recruiters much, nor heard about show meetings, financial aid, etc. I initially wondered why a student who could barely write a sentence or pick up a calculator, seemingly must have gone to great lengths to be admitted to ITT.

When the number of full-time salespeople -- recruiters, reps, whatever you want to call them -- outnumbers the full-time academic staff, that is such a huge red flag. And you can see why -- you have people like this joker trying to brainwash people into parting with $40K.

Last quarter, as adjunct, I made it one of my missions to counteract the brainwashing by joking with my students -- I told them I stayed out of the administration area of campus, because I was afraid if I walked through there I would end up buying a used car.

Legally, recruiters are not involved in advising.

Here is why. The catalogs are legally binding documents (see the ACICS criteria on this). And the catalogs say:

"The student must receive academic, attendance, and/or financial aid advising from the school, as the school deems necessary in its discretion. Students should contact the School and Program Chair(s), Associate Dean(s) or Dean for academic and attendance advising. The Director of Finance and Financial Aid Coordinator(s) conduct financial aid advising."

But recruiters will sometimes overstep their bounds and plead on campus that all the other employees send students to them for advice. The Director of Recruiting at my campus literally begged faculty to send students, who were asking for advice, to recruiters at once. He used this same jargon as the person who started this post -- it could be him writing this post, actually! I have no doubt he wanted to convince all students to stay on the roster for at least 4 years!

What in the heck is an "advisor?" I have been with the company for several years and have never heard of that job.

It's this kind of hogwash that really turned me off ITT-TEch as a STEM instructor. For a tech school, you expect the employees to use basic logic most of the time, in their jobs. Then you get this kind of gibberish.

"....when we go back to our room full of advisers we each talk about how we love our students and how we hope you'll follow through on your commitments. It is that bond we form during the interview that helps us get through the day and helps us to in turn be your cheer leader throughout your time here at ITT Tech."

Yet you have totally abandoned your students this week! They are looking to us in this anonymous gossip forum for advice because YOU let them down. YOU did not live up to your commitment! Why didn't YOU tell them about the Modany's fraud charges? Why didn't YOU tell them about the ACICS show cause directive last April and implications of accreditation sanctions? Where are YOU now? Aren't YOU on the clock this week? Why aren't you fielding calls from vets and nursing students?

This guy could definitely be a candidate for the ITT Tech Board of Directors. Complete denial and head deep in the sand.

The only "advisor" ANY ITT student has is their program chair! Recruiters screw over students who have no chance at success because they can't even pass Comp I and Math I just so they can get numbers they need to keep their pathetic jobs.

Oh, this must be the new script that the ITT-Tech call center in Indiana is trying out.

Sounds a lot like the script used by recruiters at our local campus.

Actually, I thought it was against regulations for recruiters to call themselves "advisers." Kind of like it is not permitted to refer to ourselves as a college in six states: TN, PA, MT, NV, MA, MD

You are the same people that expect enrollments despite the "outdated" labs and tuition. Listen to how you sound. And still you get on those phone rally calls and tell us how great we are and how we make a difference. Why don't you go and find another job and do yourselves a favor. Pitiful.

As a instructor I too was proud to teach the students I taught. ITT was a real school with a real goal of getting people a real education.

But..

Ever time I read one these statements like this or statements about how ITT shouldn't be shutdown without full appeal process, or it's all about choice, they are favoring the public schools. Every -- Single -- Time it is without ANY consideration about cost.

For the trillionth time. ITT WAS NOT WORTH WHAT COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT ALL!@!!!! IT'S ABOUT THE COST! and the DECEPTIVE PRACTICES SURROUNDING THE COSTS!!

Yes that reached some people who really needed to be reached. Yes the commercials were done by real people who really hired students. Yes my classes were about relevant topics. My curriculum was crap sometimes, but sometimes not. Some students excelled ,others shouldn't have been there. But in all cases, good classes, hired, not hired, bad class, it all was way too costly.

WOW, is this satire? Lets just keep going here ....

Sure don't want "know it alls" working in education -- who wants teachers and text-books! Lets just hire more recruiters to tell us how passionate they are in helping everyone better their lives!

We want more salespeople telling everyone they will surely get A+ grades and a degree just because they are so gosh darn awesome!

Adviser = sales person.

This person is a recruiter -- their job qualifications are sales experience, practice changing peoples minds.

You are a liar. ITT-Tech has no real advisers. Anyone can look on the job listings pages and see that.

If ITT-Tech really had advisers, the friggin' campuses would be open and these advisers would be working overtime to help students understand what is going on!

Instead, the recruiters were sent home -- not needed, since ITT-Tech decided not to enroll any new students this quarter, hence no big sales pitch.
