Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

I left the company only 5 months ago. I was a recruiter. We were held to the strictest of compliance. Job stressful but students great!

I was 3rd party shopped and got an excellent review. Kudos above my campus would have been nice. No support from above. We never coerced a prospective student, ever. I was shopped and did great on review. I left because leads were awful and we had to make numbers. Stress was bad but we tried our best. Our DORs boss was horrid, like we didn't exist. My DOR best boss I ever had. I feel bad for the students I still mentor from afar. This is their only choice because of circumstance and it's taking them away from a future and a way out (up). The gov't wants these schools gone but they have a purpose. Don't believe what you hear. It's so unfair. I want my students to succeed. Please let those that are in school, finish.

"Do you people realize that if it were not for Federal and State funding (your tax dollars), most public universities and junior college tuition would be comparable to the tuition at ITT"--That is a blatantly STUPID argument. If little Kevin can go to state school & have to pay $4000 for a degree or go to ITT & have to pay $30000 for it, that's what matters. ITT counts on people like little Kevin to not understand.

"I left because leads were awful and we had to make numbers. "

Well imagine being an academic staff member who is then supposed to pass 85% of a class when the students recruited simply aren't up to the standard where an 85% pass rate is remotely likely.

ITT Tech was run by a system which should be called "Profiteering By Numbers". They had numbers for everything except the criteria which showed that true academic standards were lowered time after time in favor of more revenue.

Do you people realize that if it were not for Federal and State funding (your tax dollars), most public universities and junior college tuition would be comparable to the tuition at ITT? Come on now.... As for the Representatives at my campus... They were ALL professionals and they followed their students all they way to the finish line. They worked hard to build a real relationships with their students and they worked hard to help the Academic Department! They were NOT just sales people!

The problem was always the debt load. ITT wouldn't be where it is today if they charged a reasonable amount that didn't ruin the lives of everyone who went there.

All of the reps at my campus were real nice top-notch folks, mostly high school grads, with a few having associate degrees. We were shopped by observers several times & never were found to make "false" promises or violate any laws. However, what we didn't say might have been just as unjust as potentially lying/saying something. For example we might tell the hourly cost of our credit hours, but neglect to mention the local community college was like 1/5 the price.

Many reps then were forced on a daily basis to walk a fine line between what's best for the prospective student & meetings HQ's UNRELENTING demand for more bodies. I think many reps felt a big sense of relief once a student "sat", knowing the student might leave after one single class & get most of their money back...at least temporarily the rep was out of the range of HQ's firing radar...until the next quarter.

Even the rep's boss's boss's boss (area director) was on said radar. We'd have a meeting with the area director (usually on bad numbers), then in a month he'd suddenly disappear forever, like the gulag.

I think they were all imprisoned on a remote island to make ITT apparel

Mid July layoffs went by seniority? It was explained that in order to avoid lawsuits it was a straight seniority call. ITT didn't have the time to evaluate 700 -900 reps. Cash call from DOE was pressing and ITT didn't even meet that. DOE put them on a payment plan. Lame attempt to replace reps with $14.00/hr contact center employees was thrown together in hopes of riding out the bad news cycle - accreditation events.

I agree with the person posting above. I believe you will read common comments because the environment is cookie cutter jacked up. It is consistent. If I can say one thing not so negative about ITT I can say they know how to enforce consistency. My comment is exactly the same as the preceding one. Additionally, it's ALL about generating profit for the company. If you don't or can't do the job while adhering strictly to the CYA guidelines, then you are expendable. True...the job is stressful. However true student focused individuals are more concerned with the student's success rather than the company's purse. I was informed my job no longer existed on my day off. Two employees remained...Again, how they were considered is beyond me because I have consistently been in first or second place for the number of students enrolled for the past year. Anyhow considering the CYA atmosphere of the company and the existing demographics I summarized they had to retain the African American male (under age 40) along with the over 40 White female (whose remaining was justified because she was certified to sell...oops I mean enroll students in the nursing program---which they now decided would be the only program in which they would actively recruit. The male was there to assist existing students. Anyhow...I figured this was the best configuration EEOC wise. The company consistently employs CYA standards....by the way, that's cover your a##. As I thought more about this situation, I realized that despite the menial severance package...I have still been ripped off by the company...as have many more of us. The company provided us with paid holidays on which we had to work at our regular rate. I would think this would require a more substantial rate considering it was not volunteer, and coming in, we were not told our holidays were mostly non existent. We were told we would work alternate Saturday's and ultimately ended up maybe having only one weekend off per month. You will likely hear among is that our peers are amazing people to work with. Our rep room consisted of highly degreed individuals. The majority of us were more highly educated than the instructors and we came from marketing and higher education backgrounds. We thought we were supporting a school, not participating in a grand marketing scam. To be honest...I'm relieved to be out of that environment.
