Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

This is an amazing school.

I have been with ITT for about 2 years and have enrolled approx 100 students. I was layed off 2 months ago and my family has suffered the consequences. Why you ask? So Barrack Obama can finish his witch hunt before leaving office. I have been forced to re-evaluate my thoughts on ITT but I continue to reach the same conclusion. We try extremely hard to give the student the life they are striving for. We have a ridiculous amount of compliance (decided on by the DOE) to uphold and we do it. We have shoppers very regularly that make sure this is the case. The DOE has acted frivolously and I hope the students and the American people see this. Ask the real employers, not the you tube subscriber chasers and you will find that that vast majority of IT positions out of school are ITT graduates. I am currently unemployed and very bitter about it but if this establishment of real education called me back, I would be there in a second. Think before you listen to government and the media.

As an alumni of this school, I can assure you, it's a taxpayer funded scam for privatized gain, and socialized losses (students and taxpayers). ITT Tech and its ilk are essentially the equivalent to education as payday loan companies are to banks, and sub-prime auto sales are to car dealers. Those of you who would defend the school (and its board of directors) are deluded and should read the following information below:

http://www.help.senate.gov/imo/media/for_profit_report/PartII/ITT.pdf

Kevin Modany made $7.6 million in compensation in 2009 (more than 22 times as much as Indiana University's president) while offerding degree programs which cost more than 5 times the equivalent at a community college, while spending less than community colleges on student instruction.

The majority of revenue went to marketing, recruiting, and "profit".

You can also see "The Pain Funnel" in the document. Not to mention the fact that ITT is currently facing a lawsuit from the CFPB (for predatory lending) and the SEC (for misleading investors) as well as numerous state Attorney Generals, and rightfully so.

I've attended a few universities since ITT, and I have earned a Masters degree. ITT Tech was absolutely the lowest quality education I've ever been exposed to (and it was the most expensive!).

I'm glad the Obama administration is finally shutting down this taxpayer funded scam.

I worked at ITT Tech for 12 years, well, 4 days short of 12 years. During that time I spent time as a program chair and as an Academic dean. I left, not of my own choosing, because my education and experience made my salary too high, I was replaced by 7 adjuncts. But, for the past 4 years ITT has perpetrated a scam on thousands of students. Their commercials were loaded with the worst kind of lies and, as a Professor at a leading college, I can tell you, the education they gave was out dated and disrespected by more than the department of education. Virtually no accredited college or university accepts ITT credits for transfer.

In fact, most decent schools do not count time spent working at ITT as experience.

Has anyone else noticed that posts by people claiming ITT-Tech is an "amazing school" tend to have writing skills and vocabulary skills somewhere below 8th grade level?

Says it all.

Oh, except most middle-schoolers don't throw in swear words every sentence.

Some of these posts remind me of a few students I knew who came back to class after break reeking of alcohol, called instructors b_tch, printed out pages from "Coursehero.com" and turned them in, etc.

I love how people think ITT is the problem. I sat in classes. I graduated. Yep some teachers s---ed. I went to my State's school. You think they don't have sh--ty teachers? Please, my first biology teacher at the sh--ty state school I first attended, told us he doesn't have time to learn our names because 7 out of 10 will either fail or drop. I dropped 3rd semester. I went back to ITT 8 years later. You know what, most teachers gave a f--- and busted their a-- to help the students that struggled, even the ones who should of failed. Several students in my classes s---ed. They didn't show up, they didn't study, they expected their degree handed to them. Then when they barely graduated, they were upset that they couldn't get a job because they couldn't hold a coherent conversation about IT because they didn't pay the f--- attention. F--- them, because they make the people like me who actually worked hard and got decent jobs, look like sh--. Doesn't matter if they went to ITT or anywhere else, the people that failed, were going to fail anyways. If it wasn't for ITT I wouldn't be where I am. I may of paid too much, but that was my choice.

But whatever, ITT's the predator here. ITT made the students not show up for class, not study and overall just too f---ing stupid to do their part.

ITT tech is not the 1st and it won't be the last school closed by this administration. The President made it very well known that he believes ALL schools should be run by the government and only the government. He has attacked private schools from K-12 to colleges. He has attack religious schools and charter schools. Just as he did with the small banks, small insurance companies, small automakers, and small businesses he is doing the same with small or private schools. He is consolidating these markets into a few "Too big to Fail" corporations who are mere puppets for the government until the government can completely take over the industry. The sad thing is he has not at all been secret about this but no one actually listened to what he said he was going to do.

"ITT used to be a good place to get an electronics, IT or drafting associates degree. Unfortunately Modany turned it into a Title 4 funding transfer machine that gave lip service to education."

That really is it in a nutshell. Not witch hunt - just an incompetent management which destroyed the company. Modany appears to be an average bean counter with only an undergraduate degree yet the board reappointed him. Go figure!

ITT used to be a good place to get an electronics, IT or drafting associates degree. Unfortunately Modany turned it into a Title 4 funding transfer machine that gave lip service to education. The entire focus was money and metrics designed to maximize profits, in theory those priorities should improve the quality of goods and services, unfortunately Modany leadership resulted in a race to the bottom in academics. Academics was their product.

Academic affairs were continously asked to increase classroom size, increase instructor teaching loads, reduce rigor, increase simulation while attempting to provide hands on learning.

If you measure the wrong thing and give priority to the wrong values, and have inadequate over site , this will always be the result.

Sad, a number of people got rich while a huge number of students have been harmed.

@J6n4c7S-byz

What is your point? ITT Tech completely abandoned academic standards despite the best efforts of many teachers. If you are selling "degrees" then abandoning academic standards devalues those "degrees". What did Modany expect would be the outcome?

There are thousands of former adjuncts who know the BS that went on there. Posts attempting to deflect blame to politicians seem to ignore the fact that ITT Tech's management brought this upon themselves.

Hey, fella talking about the Kool aid drinking. You did nothing but read a few articles, post some of it and call it your own. We see the headlines. But as we all know, there are always 2 sides to a story. And this presidential election has certainly informed us of this. The media exaggerates, politicians and government lies. If Hilary lies, think what government does as well. Don't believe everything you read dude, because it sounds like your the kool aid drinker. I'd love to hear what department you work for because if its HQ or some upper management, then you went along for the ride. You are the real kool aid drinker. If you feel that strongly about what you just said, then you should have never worked for ITT Tech. Clearly, at that point, it was only for the money and that puts you right up there with the incompetence.

All you did was say a few things that really are your own opinion that I am quite sure you can't back. Your speaking in generalities.

Have some compassion dude. Now go on time out and think about what you said.

"This is an amazing school."

It is certainly amazing that the currently management destroyed a once proud name.

It is certainly amazing that ACICS didn't pick up in the widespread abuse of their accreditation standards earlier.

It is certainly amazing that this revenue-driven train wreck was allowed to carry on for so long.

"So Barrack Obama can finish his witch hunt before leaving office."

This is the voice of a Kool-Aid drinker. The department at most ITT Tech campuses with the highest number of critical thinkers was academic affairs. Republicans and Democrats alike in academic affairs knew that ITT Tech had major problems and that this outcome is the result of the blatant incompetence displayed by Modany, his senior staff and the BOM.

"I am currently unemployed and very bitter about it but if this establishment of real education called me back, I would be there in a second. "

The bitterness shows. You might want to take a more realistic view before you interview elsewhere. There will be no call back.

"Think before you listen to government and the media."

The academic affairs staff were the group most likely to do that. The same rule was applied to anything spouted by HQ, DMs, Directors etc. most of whom had a significantly lower level of education than the academic affairs department.
