Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

Hourly vs Salary?

So I got to thinking, why would anyone want to work hourly for NOV?

Hourly: No bonus, no OT for the most part, No raises in a few years, 3 or so days of sick time a year?

Salary: Bonus but only for managers?, unlimited sick time, they too haven't had raises but they received a bonus when we didn't receive a raise.

Thoughts?

I was promoted from an hourly to salary position. Worked almost as many hours, made less money for three years straight. Yeah, some salaried folks don't earn their keep. But how would you like having to climb out of bed at 4am to drive five hours to a rig, evaluate an issue, get back in the truck and drive back arriving at 10pm to unload the truck. And be back in by 8am to file reports and hold meetings to address the findings. On salary, no OT. Made more money as hourly, but when I got burned out on these kinds of days I could walk in to my manager and tell him "break time" and cut out early for the weekend. Hourly and salary both have their advantages, but money is not necessarily one of them.

LOL! Absolutely no clue of the wages paid beyond being a production worker. Work smarter, not harder is the life of the wise. That and open a book once in awhile and learn something.

Sorry about your "40 hours week being lazy" assumption which automatically means being laid-off first in your small-minded brain. NOV closed several offices completely. Everyone gone.

Also, in regards to my post below, not everyone cares about having a $300,000+ house in the suburbs, having kids, buying more than 1 vehicle or buying a new vehicle, expensive vacations. So my point is that it depends on what one values in life. I look at our materialistic society and just laugh. People have become prisoners to all of the sh-- they own and people they have to support.

I was very happy being an hourly office worker. At times, there was OT and that was nice, but I also liked having a life, so OT wasn't a big priority. The 3 days of sick time didn't bother me 'cause I am a very healthy person, but when I heard that salary people have unlimited sick time, I couldn't believe it! Some people took advantage of that, trust me! Call in sick for 2 days and then on the 3rd day when a doctor's note would be required, of course they showed up. Anyway, I liked it much better when I worked for a company that offered a bank of PTO days to everyone to be used for vacation, sick time, taking care of the kids time, whatever. I think that is a much more fair system as there are always going to be entitled jerks who will take advantage of "unlimited sick time". Just brings down the morale of those who are mentally / physically healthy and honest people.

Yeah, not getting a bonus was the hard part, but at the time I was OK with it since I don't like salary jobs and being forced to work 50 hour weeks at times. At least I always knew that all of my time was accounted for with $$$$. Basically, I just was happy to have a good job and health insurance.

Pampa is a wasteland. Need to shut the doors. Lock it up.

You are full of sh--, the Gov. doesn't determine that you fkkking moron. In Pampa the office workers don't clock in, some come in late, leave early, get high( they don't get tested) . If they check their work computer they would see that some do absolutely nothing. Pampa is the norm at NOV.

I was (b4 being laid off) hourly, got bonuses, plenty of OT, and with an understanding supervisor plenty of vacation/sick time (flexible schedule). I know for a fact I made more per year than at least 2 salaried ppl in my group and I held a lesser position. In fact, I believe this is also y I was laid off and not them. . . .oh well their loss!

The federal government determines if a position is hourly or salary. So stop punching up crap post on here and do your job. Maybe you will get promoted to a salary position then.
