ITT Tech is gone, DeVry is next

The Department of Education has ended student loans at ITT Tech due to fraud investigations and accreditation violations. The school will close within a year or so, just like Corinthian. DeVry is next.

Here are some eye-opening stats about DeVry, such as the 22% graduation rate in Virginia:

Boy oh boy. Devry is in a BIG pickle.

Admit guilt and settle with FTC? Sure... but then defense to repayment and class action lawsuits come. Not to mention letter of credit requirements coming.

Why does the FTC let them off without admitting guilt... unless it's a huge fine. And after that acquisition they did, Devry does not have much cash.

They are in a tough spot. This likely is the next house to collapse in the neighborhood.

A few million dollars donated to the Clinton Foundation would keep DeVry around for many more years.

Is Devry really any different from ITT Tech?

They are being sued by FTC.

Did anyone see Rohit Chopra get appointed to Clinton's transition team?

THAT is going to make Devry settling the FTC lawsuit VERY interesting given the defense to repayment rules coming into force.

Good luck.

Because DEG "schools" are almost to the point of accepting anybody with a pulse and a checkbook. They brag about how many students they have. But the question is what is the quality of the students they recruit?

I have wondering how Chamberlain can continue to grow given such ridiculously expensive tuitions (2-3x other options)

Does not make sense it can continue to grow

One of our professors asked a question that seems to sum up everything we're witnessing in all departments, and explains a big part of what's going wrong. He said, "Why does it always feel like caring for students is going against the company?" He's right. If we did everything "right" according to the expectations, we'd be screwing the students over. On the other hand, if we try to do what's right for students, we get "talked to" by management. It's a no-win situation. My direct supervisor is on the side of the students for sure, but often when he tries to do what's best for them, he gets yelled at by HIS boss for being out of compliance or derailing the system or some other stupid thing. It really is sickening. DeVry "Care" is an empty promise.

At our metro faculty resisted and fought every change. We were ignored completely when we said that this mode of education WOULD NOT WORK. In fact, upper management took our managers aside and asked them why they were having so much trouble getting us on board with their "wonderful" changes. My regret is not getting out of there sooner and letting my career suffer because of their horrible reputation. It isn't only the students they are destroying.

Instructors could no longer control the situation and let it get worse---Well, it is doubtful that all of the many instructors had much to do with the demise in the first place. Their complaints & suggestions were met with resistance. It's unreal how it changed.

Academic freedom, it's important at a University, but NOT important at a for profit university. Everything is cookie cutter, from Admissions, to Financial Aid, to course content, and that's not good for students. It's really sad, but it has been going on for years. The entire premise of DeVry is to MAKE MONEY, not to educate students. The educating students part is just a bump in the road of DeVry collecting Financial Aid money, and obviously not very important to them.

Again, you don't PROFIT off full time instructors who care about their students. You don't PROFIT off a student who does not take a second course because they are unhappy with student services. The call centers are scripted, and if the person you are speaking with goes off the script, they are written up and fired. You cannot help a student if you are following a script. It's disgusting.

What would have prevented this fast downward spiral? ---Instructors could no longer control the situation and let it get worse. Then the school had no way to recover without enough population. They are the front line in the recovery.

It seems like not long ago DeVry was 5 steps ahead of ITT in terms of quality...what happened? When? How did we drop so soon? What would have prevented this fast downward spiral?

I agree with your assessment. All the cuts lately have forced me to work with other departments and locations, and I have learned that we all see different clues that point to the same fact that DeVry is a zombie just staggering its last few steps before rotting into the ground.

The fate of ITT is a vision of things to come for DeVry. I think it'll happen within the coming year.
