Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Future

Of all the predictions that have been made about DeVry's future, the one thing that nearly all of them have in common is the belief that DeVry doesn't have a future. Our group cancelled over 40 classes due to low enrollment this session. We had students enrolled who were new starts, but wisely decided to go elsewhere when their very first classes were all cancelled. No matter how hard DeVry tries to convince us that they're OK and trying to turn things around, their decisions prove that they don't care about continuing. They're deliberately tearing the organization apart piece by piece and the only real question is when our last day will actually be. We know it's soon, but how soon? You know they're not going to give us any advance notice, not more than a few weeks anyway. And that's just for the people who get laid off. There is even less warning for the ones who are fired, and not much more for those who are pressured into resigning.

So, what I'm trying to say is this: Any day could be the last day for any of us. Layoffs are frequent, unnecessary firings and pressured resignations are becoming that way, and the student population is dropping like a rock. How do we stay open? We don't for much longer.

Same here. I used to love my job at DeVry. I enjoyed almost everything about it. I rarely had a truly bad day. Now I have at least one or two bad days every week, and it's all because of the giant mess that management has made for us and our students. I still don't know the "compliant" way to answer when students express concern for their future, frustration about their favorite faculty being laid off, anger over the cancelation and availability of the classes they need, and irritation that all of our processes take so much longer than they used to. It's depressing.

We have some at our location who would volunteer to be in the next round of layoffs because everything is going downhill so quick. It's a miserable place to work now. Just riding it out until something else comes up and then leave. Although there are some days unemployment looks better than being here. At least there would he free time to go to interviews. It's so sad because I USED to like my job. Not many can say that. Now....nope.

So many bad choices made by management and seeing the negative impact on the students makes it painful to watch. And they keep compounding bad decisions with more bad decisions. This place is sinking like a stone.

@IyT6rHu-1zdc, I completely agree with everything you said. Nearly everyone at my campus is actively looking to leave. We have been swapping letters of recommendation like they are trading cards. We don't even bother to keep it hush-hush anymore. Those who are near retirement age are even investigating early retirement. I just wonder if DeVry knows or cares what they've driven us to do. I seriously wonder if they are making things bad for us on purpose so we'll quit and they won't have to pay severance.

I would not consider myself safe anywhere. Seems mgmt is now laying people off and then hiring new people so they can have workers at lower pay. Last couple of weeks there have been a lot of new hires in the lobby when I come into work in the morning. And let's not forget CCN at least has had some people of their own let go. The safest bet is to leave the organization.

The For-Profit-Schools bubble has been expending like the universe and now is deflating slowly but surely. All bubbles eventually burst just line the Dot.Com and the housing ones...
