Think about it, this company tells stores to cut 1/4 of their already minimal payroll through July while they spend MILLIONS to fly international execs in and put them up for some lame as hell "cocktail party".

Do you REALLY still think things will get better?

Silly people....you will get nothing. Payroll will continue to be reduced, Stores will be closed, severance reduced or denied. Raises and bonuses are things of the past. IF they keep your store open, and IF they do not fire you because you make to much, all you are is a way to keep making money for the execs to pilfer until the whole company is gone or sold off.

At Staples PAs are reviewed by the DM, and RVP and rescored to meet a quota. Only a very few would get an "exceeds expectations". They do not want to give the raises connected to good evals, and they want everyone feeling sub par.

Staples is circling the drain, so they want as many people as possible a hair width away from a write up or PIP so they can hastily fire people rather than pay severance or UI. They have no desire to pay for positive motivation. Good raises and bonuses are a thing of the past, unless you are an exec, and then it's just a cash grab .

Reading all these comments certainly makes you think, this is a bad place to work for. Everyone is angry, discruntal and exhausted not to mention under paid I received an average review this year, meets expectations I feel like I have exceeded. Things that are out of my control was mentioned. Hopeful I'm out by oct. 2016. That's just sad to think that way, unfortunately it is true

"Never understand why payroll would be cut when it's needed the most"

It is pretty simple actually.....cutting expenses to come in line with 2nd Qtr expectations is simply more important than adequately preparing for the busiest 6 weeks of the year. We all know it is stupid, but that's the way publically traded companies are run, short term tactics prevail over long term strategy.

It is also sets the stage for the "disorganization by design" and "impossible task" scenarios. Give everyone more work than can be realistically accomplished with the payroll given so that it is easy to turn around and counsel a subordinate for poor performance. This allows for the quick termination of "undesirables" and it makes most others scramble and seek to go above an beyond to make amends for their shortfalls, to attempt to preserve their jobs.

The draw back is that after busting their butts for so long just to tread water, and with rewards like promotions, raises or bonuses few and far between, these people soon become the disgruntled undesirables. But that works in Staples favor, provided there are no major incidents caused by the disgruntled associates. Staples does not want people to build up tenure, because that means higher salaries/wages and more benefits. So it is better to just let people become disgruntled and then make the quit or fire them.

Never understand why payroll would be cut when it's needed the most at the busy times at store level.? Bts has to be filled, shelfs stocked, ups is crazy,at this time in my store, there is so much to do,no one is just standing around. Accually the employees are frustrated at doing multiple tasks and not having the time to complete one. Or not completing the job they are hired to do,due to be called to help others in other areas of the store because they are understaffed. It maddening, no overtime so you have to work fast so your not really giving 100% to anything at,all. Its,all half done!! Just like every year!!

Exceptional service. That's a joke. Everyone is overworked underpaid and they really don't care. An aggravated and frustrated leader only trickles down to the employees. So if you can pretend that everything is ok inside your store then I guess you might have good customer service. Don't be fooled everyone even the little employees know what's going on.

Also, cutting hours provides an opportunity for Vinnie to go into stores and raise hell over things not getting done, including things that corporate said did not have to be done while the cuts are in effect.

Disorganization by design - he can then go and have DMs write up or PIP managers he does not like (which is basically everyone)

Staples is aware of the after effects of cutting labor. They know that less payroll equals less service but they don't care. It's part of the business model at this point. Employees know this, and so do the customers. Customers only shop at Staples out of habit or last resort. Staples is an irrelevant business model from the past. They are not gaining customers, they are on a sharp decline. Staples knows this and they also know they can't change this. We are all on a ride down a very steep decline but only a very small few will benefit. What can you get out of it?

No cycle counts saves some time, but the rest of the tasks on that list takes about 10 min. Give me a break.

As the end gets closer, the only controllable expense they can cut and control is labor. Sign of a company on the ropes and not meeting expectations. Unfortunately corporate doesn't realize the MORE you cut the labor, the LESS service you provide, and the sales comp NEGATIVE. Remember customers vote with their feet and the more you cut the labor the less votes you get, plain and simple. This company on the brick and mortar side is done. 500 stores by year end 2017, get ready for it, it is coming!

The hours cuts (60-100 per week, per store, chain-wide), secondary to depressed 2nd quarter profits, were announced more than a week ago, along with a list of tasks which are suspended or reduced for the remainder of the month so stores may continue to offer exceptional customer service.
