I was lucky enough to work in software dev from 1987-2012 and was fortunate enough to never be layed off. This industry has changed a lot, thanks to the growth of cheap labor from India and China. With the advance of Agile, it has become a slave labor environment with the threat of layoffs always on the horizon. Glad to be out of that rat race and happily retired. Good luck to those affected!

@bqi I agree with you that US workers aren't necessarily more exceptional than foreign workers. However, by continually resorting to cheaper labor, you bring down wages of US workers and create economic issues like we're seeing now. And why are Chuckles, his Board, and the execs so well compensated? Board members show up to a couple of meetings a year and make far more than the average Cisco emoloyee--its a sham. Also, just because Cisco has stashed money overseas doesn't mean it was earned there. Their are tax loopholes (double Irish, Dutch sandwich) that allow companies to CLAIM revenue was earns overseas to avoid taxation.

Elitism is primary focused from the Bay Area.

Two points:

Firstly, this is nothing about age or tenure its simply about focusing in other areas. If you are in an area that Chucky has deemed not to be the focus of the company then you could be in trouble. From a company perspective it makes sense. Sorry but it does. If you specialise in a department making square widgets and the company wants to make round widgets...then the square widget makers are likely to let go and the round widget makers are likely to be kept.

Secondly, Cisco employees in the States need to wise up. Sorry guys but Cisco is a global company. You cannot just keep your job because you are American and therefore think you are the best. Its a big world out there. I've read so much on this site that implies Cisco employees in the States are better or more deserving than everyone else. Bashing India seems to be a sport...very sad and small minded. The fact is that most of Cisco money is outside the US and so growth / acquisitions will be outside the US. The large number of layoffs that will undoubtedly hit the US simply reflect this fact.

You should join us in RTP. We got a moonshine still in the the woods and the Darins serenade us with jug music. Very nice.

So, don't be an a_hole jerk! RTP has layoffs too. Drop your elitist SJC attitude d--k.

#NoLoyalty - the millenials are the only group that grasps this concept - they dont expect or give any... Pay me now, do not cut into my free time, invest in me now, be nice to me and feed me all the time. So, when you lay me off I will be fine as you paid up in full from the get go...

They learned this by watching you and me and the rest if working America being screwed by corporations for decades now - the kids figured it all out... So, no loyalty and pay up now
