Let's analyze from TSMC perspective:
-
It is widely assumed Intel will manufacture modems on its own technology in the future.
-
The mobile market is moving towards SoC and away from slim modems. Therefore for cost and power it is rational Apple will want to pair AP with modem.
-
Manufacturing Intel modems in this transition puts TSMC business at risk with Apple in the future.
Result TSMC refuse to manufacture next Intel modem.
Let's analyze from Qualcomm perspective:
-
Half of Apple business not worth the effort.
-
Intel does not have cdma currently.
-
Qualcomm has significant unit cost advantage.
Result Qualcomm offer competitive pricing for majority Apple business and penalizing pricing strategy for sharing with Intel.
Result Intel cannot produce next product.
