Thread regarding CSC layoffs

Changes to CSC's U.S. Vacation Policy

CSC announced today, August 1st 2016, employees will no longer accrue vacation. Any existing vacation balance must be used by Dec 31 2016. I believe this is a slimball move by the company so that when the merger of CSC & HPE & the predicted layoffs the company will not be liable to payoff employees outstanding vacation.

I have never worked for a more employee unfriendly company. Thank goodness I am just killing time until I retire. Screw this place.

My very first thoughts were exactly that - there's no way HPE or CSC is changing the vacation policy for the benefit of the employees. The timing is obvious as should be the end-game, after they HPE/CSC form a new entity they will no longer be obligated for any "accrued" vacation costs. The merger just happens to be taking place very early in the year where employees that are marked for termination without knowing will be let go; thus maximizing the amount of money the company will save when they execute their plan. No one with a spec of common sense would assume otherwise, In the statement from the CSC CEO he mentioned an overall savings of 50% in "employee restructuring" a secret term for maximizing profitability through job reductions.

By cutting off the accrual of vacation time and going to this "unlimited" policy, it saves the company money. This way, they do not have to pay out any unused vacation time you have accrued when it's time reduce more of the workforce.

Long time HPE employee here. Another thing that is total bullshit .. They shut down during Christmas and you are required to use your vacation then. So if you have 3 weeks ... Well only 2 of them are actually yours to use when YOU choose. Welcome to the show - we are full of buzz words, bullies, threats and while doing 3 jobs at a time.

If you are WFR'd by HPE and live in certain states you will receive your vacation payout, CA is one of only five.

Pontificate - express one's opinions in a way considered annoyingly pompous and dogmatic - Yup about right.

To the last comment - there is no "red" anymore. If you were in the "red" prior to Aug 1 the slate is wiped clean. Some companies term this "flexible" vacation "unlimited". I could pontificate on the implications for vacation requests that are subject to your managers approval and the fact that now your actual amount of time off has to be weighed against the time off of others in your group....before, your length of service meant you got more time by definition - not the case any longer. That pontification would be pointless, however, as this is about preparing for the merger, the layoffs that necessitates, etc. So, the thing to do is prepare for your goodbye as the day draws nigh.

I can see not being able to roll over days since that became HP's policy..... but to not accrue any for the remainder of the year??

Unless you get all your days at the beginning of the year and/or can go in the red until you have earned your days or hours, that s---s!

That's because HPE does not allow carryover vacation into the next year and their WFR process will not pay out the accrued vacation or PTO.

I thought the same exact thing when I saw the vacation policy change in my email this morning. Nothing is done at CSC for the benefit of the employees.
