Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

Student Professional Experience (SPE) requirements and sponsorship

My friend told me he is required to complete 120 hours of SPE while attending ITT in Illinois. He wasn't able to find a paid opportunity, so he will be working for a professor (the company is not a legal entity and looks to have been formed right after the professor started working as an adjunct at the school). Is there some type of incentive offered to professors for doing something like this?

My boss would love to offer internships with our software company to qualified IT students and I called the career services department to inquire about program involvement twice, but I never received a response. Why would ITT ignore calls from legitimate employers looking to offer students a paid internship? Does anyone have more information about SPE? Is it a waste of time to continue to try to contact them? Should I contact headquarters instead?

As I recall, when SPE was rolled out, it was under the typical ITT premise of a great idea...

"hey career services, while you are struggling to help get our 28 grads decent jobs, why not line up temp jobs for oh, say, all 367 beginning students? They will appreciate it and probably stay enrolled longer at our campus!! Your expected target is 100% participation. We won't even begin rating you on the % of all students in SPE until next quarter, so you can even use this extra time to plan ahead! Have a great quarter implementing SPE!" If they don't have cars or transportation means to a job, that will have to be dealt with. Your director will "work with you" to ensure everything goes smoothly.

...I think it ended up mostly as a disaster, with a few successes thrown in.

Go to the Director of Campus and if not then report it to Head Quarters. Ask for the Manager of Career Services for National Campuses. Student Professional Experience is not REQUIRED but the Career Services Department has it included in their campus metrics, so that's the tricky part. Legally they should not be telling students that it is REQUIRED, but they're trying to cover their a-- so that they can scare the students into completing the hours. Yes, I was previously a Director of Career Services for ITT (fortunately I am not working at that IMMORAL hell hole anymore). If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Contact the director. Not the norm in my opinion.

ITT Tech is a scam. Don't sully your business by association.

What? If you are coming to lay-off forum for help, because local ITT-Tech career office isn't returning your calls, you have answered your own question! Yes, it is a waste of time trying to do business with ITT-Tech.

Read a few of the entries in this forum --- its all about students and employees who have wasted enough time already with ITT-Tech.

If you have not heard back from the Director of Career Service or the Career Services Specialist, the next step would be to talk to the Director or the Dean. I am not sure that contacting HQ would do any good. And if you still don't get an answer well... that tells you all you need to know. That they are just happy working with the small pool of employers that they have.
