Intel used to be very different back in the 90s, even 10 or 5 years ago. Sadly now it is just a mediocre company. It certainly seems this is the edge of the abyss and Intel still has far to fall before it gets back up, same process that IBM and HP went through just a few years back.
Myself I'm leaving this once-great company in the next few weeks after 15 years of rewarding work and good memories for the most part. Thankfully I got VSP offer, was already thinking of leaving in the next 1-2 years, this whole process just accelerated things for me a bit.
I've worked on both American and European corporations. The main difference is that in times of crises, european companies will try much harder to avoid layoffs. This comes both from work regulation in Europe and from mentality differences. European companies see employees as part of the company and they strive less to make the stock holders happy. In terms of business I think the american way works better, but from an employee PoV it is definately more stressful working for an American corporate employer.
IBM is laying off. Severance is 1 months pay no matter how many years of service. Big blue has fallen pretty far. Intel blue is just getting started.
Typical for a publicly held company. They are slaves to their shareholders and don't give a crap about anything else.
This behavior is, sadly, typical of American companies, but at least the severance packages being offered by Intel are more generous than those offered by most American companies. In the 1980s and 1990s intel did not do this sort of thing but things have apparently changed.
What, you mean offer people up to a years salary and benefits to leave?

Most Americans are fake. They use you and throw you out like trash when they are done with you. In your face they smile, say hi but sat you in the back. Never trust Americans. That's why they are not popular anywhere in the world. They are going to elect Trump as their president. What does that tell you?
