Announcement from Shira

The following is a message for all associates from Shira Goodman, President, North American Operations.

Dear Staples Associates,

We are announcing changes to our North American retail structure and leadership team.

Steve Matyas has been appointed President, North American Retail. Steve has over 25 years of deep experience at Staples. His drive and passion for delivering profitable customer experiences, continuous growth, innovation and a winning culture is well known across Staples. He will be spending a substantial portion of his time in the U.S. and is excited and eager to begin his new role.

US Retail will now move to two Divisions: West and East. The following additional changes will be made to support this structure:

Otis Pannell will lead the West Division. Otis has been at my right hand over the last 6 months, a critical advisor to me and the team as we navigated through significant change. I could not be more thankful for his counsel, coaching, leadership and friendship during this time. His 27 years of experience at Staples is invaluable. I am delighted that he will be taking on this new role and he and his family are thrilled to be relocating back to California as a result.

Mike DeSanto will lead the East Division. Mike also has deep experience, with over 28 years at Staples, and has held leadership roles in Staples.com, Merchandising, Store and Field Operations. He already knows the East Division very well and has led the growth of some of our most profitable markets in recent years. I am equally delighted that Mike is taking on this new role and, together with Otis, will make a very powerful partnership.

Mike Naab will move to a new role leading Region 4. Mike has been a valued member of the US Retail team for 22 years. He made significant contributions initially as our Director of Operations and then further spread his wings as a successful RVP for 13 years. Based on his track record of results and leadership, we promoted Mike to Division 2 SVP in 2012. We are grateful for Mike’s business insight, his legacy of growing key talent and look forward to his continued success in his new assignment.

Dick Neff and Andy Lewis will retire from Staples in October of this year after completing their respective transitions. Separate communications related to Dick and Andy will follow, recognizing them for their many years of incredible service. Suffice it to say we could not be more thankful and grateful for their leadership, service, contribution and sage counsel over the years. We look forward to roasting and toasting them in fitting style closer to their retirement.

Wishing I never heard Mike Naab's name. He may be in a leadership position, but that man is no leader. In fact, his decisions and initiatives at Barnes & Noble are helping to bury the company. I hope he enjoys his bonuses, they have been earned on the backs of the book sellers whose jobs he 'eliminated'. Receiving and logistics are screwed. If the book seller at your local Barnes & Noble can't find the book you are looking for, it's because Mike Naab thought it was a great idea to slash payroll so damn much there aren't enough hours available to unpack deliveries and get product onto the shelves. Thanks for destroying what was once a thriving company, Mike

Otis should have been fired before Demos...this ego will continue to destroy the company....sending him to the west coast to start the closing of the stores...once they have completed the closures, we will read that Otis is retiring...taking the money and running to the bank...smart move for him..bad move for Staples

They are making sure long term upper management getting set up for nice retirements while the long term GMs are screwed..

"The ONLY reason Otis still has a job is bc he's black"

I agree, and if he was even slightly competent he may have held a higher position.

In 2012 Otis was made EVP and Vinnie Servello replaced Bill Madormo as Reg 1 RVP. The last 4 years, under these two failures, has absolutely been the worst time in my career. Neither one knows how to actually lead.

They know Ois is an idiot and has a very poor rep among the retail division. Sorry west coast, maybe they'll send Vinnie your way too, it will be very difficult to pry his lips off Otis' butt.

While we're at who should be gone, Joe Doody at a $3.7 million comp package should be gone too. A Vice Chiarman does NOTHING and gets paid for it. Think about that cash being used for employee hours!

I can't say this is positive but he has spearheaded the mass exodus of experienced , dedicated managers. He has saved a lot of payroll, but has upended store operations. He has spread his toxicity down through the RVP and DMs.

I have seen stores that were very profitable turn to crap because the managers that ran them were considered overpaid and driven out. They were replaced by inexperienced managers that had no idea how to run a store. I have a friend that works in a store that consistently comped positively and had great CSATs. The GM was fired, the SM was transferred out. Two brand new people were put in those positions and are totally clueless. The Ops sup effectively runs that store.

Let's be real. The ONLY reason Otis still has a job is bc he's black. Plain and simple. I challenge anyone on here to name one thing Otis accomplished the last few years that produced anything positive to the success of Staples.

Otis needs to keep in mind that being sent to the West coast is the same as having a few months left till your execution.

So , if Otis was so valuable why is he getting kicked to the West coast and the Canadian taking the President North American retail position?

Not complaining, Otis is an idiot and should have been fired.

The fact that he was bumped down to SVP from EVP and not given the president position shows Shira does not have the confidence in him that she projected in her announcement.

Hopefully DeSanto will see the tide is changing and there is no room for idiots and nasty curmudgeons like Vinnie or Phil Spadaro.

This announcement has nothing to do with the earlier restructure. However, it was communicated to US Retail associates today. There's been no notification of media/investors, as far as I'm aware, at least not via our Web site.
