BK did not think of Drones as the next big thing. Drones has been in the news and quite common before he thought to even utilize them for who knows what. Merely a talking point with no application. He just wants to get his name associated with an "idea". Once again when it fails to patch on as a revenue provider, we can all blame him and the Board.
IoT is commodity land where everyone is scrambling for growth. 60% margins aren't there likely 10% or less for good companies with lean structure, for Intel it will be losses that will make mobile look like nothing if they do get in. If they think selling drones and 5G will grow the cloud, look at how microscopes and cameras helped sell computers, LOL.
Memory is the land of losses for a company like Intel. They don't have the right cost structure to compete.
FPGA acceleration for the cloud and their recent debt financed buy, while interesting will be a bust. Google, Nvidia and AMD already have shone custom hardwear wins versus in field configurable for specialized search and other applications.
Intel needs to try and leverage it's manufacturing leadership. The problem there is the extreme focus on x86 and leadership nodes combined with the late 14nm and 10nm has stressed the organization so much that no resources are able to focus on adapting their many strengths to wins. Since x86 pays the bills they will continue to stretch the organization beyond the break point and everything is compromised. The recent outside leadership have no insight nor ability to fix this and no one in TMG is a visionary capable of breaking open the situation.
No, 14nm and 10nm and the crazy fascination with the Moore's Law thing has killed the golden goose egg layer.
What they need to do:
Set all the design teams free to fab where they want. What will happen is many may stay outside and some that fab inside will go outside.
TMG let them stand alone as a spinoff. Will force them to be accountable for their true structure cost and features that others want and willing to pay for. TMG will be rudely surprised.
Very simple make everyone compete and cut what doesn't.
My idea: stop rewarding people for playing internal politics (focal), and institute a new review system that rewards people based on external results (sales, cost reduction, TTM, etc). Then all your employees will have the incentive to come up with the next big thing. (Right now their incentive is to NOT share the next big thing because it will get killed in the political wars before getting a chance to try it.)

1) If I have a good idea, I would go find a venture capitalist and start up my own company, why would I share my idea with Intel? I might be promoted next year if my idea pans out, but ISP the following year
2) If I have a good idea, do you think someone who flaunts shamelessly flying 100 drones is able to appreciate my novel idea?
