IMO, the company and many managers don't know what makes a good employee. I've seen too many good people leave because management failed to recognize their talents and played favorites with the mediocre emploees who know how to schmooz. Hard to be a successful business when you believe politicians make the best employees. I guess they don't teach common sense in business school.

Staples is a joke
I think there is a guy name frank Torres that works there, he is with PC Support I think he could know.
To the person posting about the Northern California DCS center. Maybe just give a call to see if the GM still works here. She will answer your call is my guess and you can find out for yourself.
Playing favorites with mediocre employees was taken to a new level in California.
Like an Inca from Peru? That's almost to Anarctica isn't it. I did not know they had stores that far south
I'd be the first to point out Joe Baxter's shortcomings (lord knows there were enough of them) but I'm pretty sure his departure was a mutual decision. And are you talking about the GM meeting in Florida a few years ago? I didn't see him drinking heavily. Some of his GMs however........
I am hearing rumors Otis was moved to SVP of west coast. US split to 2 divisions East & West. Big shakeup among SVPs and RVPs. We can only hope Vinnie is among those tossed.
They said rvp Kevin Thomas retired to. Would not be surprised if he was forced out.
Come on guy. We all know Joe Baxter retired. It had nothing to do with his age, high salary or the fact that a 3rd grader had better spelling/grammar skills than him..
So I am guessing she is no longer around?
I believe she was from South America somewhere. Maybe Peru? Never really heard where.
To the person listing the DMs...you forgot Joe Baxter who was let go because he was too old and made too much money. (plus he drank a little too much (remember Florida?))
I remember a guy named Harlan that once visited our DCS. He seemed like a good guy and visited with me in my department and asked about both my job and duties as well as my interests in life and background. He liked my work ethic and enthusiasm was good. He was friendly and when he walked off I thought to myself he's a pretty good guy. He was based out of corporate in MA and was making his rounds through all of the DCS centers nation wide. Then poof he was let go. At that moment, I red flagged the whole Print operations management that continued to unfold as my employment comtinued. I also nicknamed the whole operations of my center when my supervisor was run off for no reason by the GM. "The square wheels gang"
Watching From Afar is spot on, as usual. I have seen several good GMs harassed until they quit or if they don't, eventually fired. Same with DMs.
Vinnie Servello DM casualty list :
Bob Uthoff - forced retirement
Rich Bradley - gave 2 week notice, was told to leave that day.
Bernie Wojna - (Smartest one) saw the writing on the wall and quit, taking several manager with him
Steve Lemiuex - (Vinnie's only friend) fired
Lisa Eithor - quit in style at regional GM meeting, also followed by several GMs
I am sure there are more. I have actually heard DM's say they hope Vinnie drives off a cliff.
Although I understand OP's sentiment it contains a flaw in the WHY the good managers et. al. are leaving... they are being FORCED out systematically by threat of being fired regardless of how well they have been performing. THIS IS BY DESIGN. The fact that butt kissers replace them is NOT by design, it's just that they cost much less.... This is at ALL levels in the company by the way including Supervisors in stores all the way up to VP's.
The manager at the Pleasanton DCS is Latin American right? I am drawing a blank on her name. Or did she lose her job over the years, or was she the problem
No question about it. An awful lot of butt kissin' going on out there. I noticed that in my first week working there many years ago. The boot licking never bothered me so much. Believe me, I tried to do it to but I just wasn't very good at it. I decided I would stand proud and let my numbers speak for themselves. That's how it works right? Work your butt off, exceed expectations, meet your goals, etc. Somebody will surely take notice and I'll be climbing that corporate ladder. Never got me anywhere. Instead I was pushed out. I was never one of the "good ole boys" and, frankly, I'm glad. I don't have to watch that sinking ship go down from the deck.
The OP is correct about everything....
....but how is that any different than any other company or business in America?
Previous comment is spot on about them simply not caring about the good workers. They also allow GM's to "investigate themselves" against allegations made against them to HR. HR then has the very people who are having serious allegations proven to HR terminate the employment of great workers who have leveled the complaint. This practice was perfected by and used regularly by the GM and AGM of the Pleasanton, California DCS print center. Total barbarians who ran off a great crew of people. My only justice is that this ruthless practice soon sent the center into a final tailspin that will likely lead to it being closed. That hurts more people who will lose jobs as a result of the complete incompetence of leadership at that particular DCS. I would imagine this is practiced at other centers also as it seems to be the general pattern across the board.
The exact can be said of contract.
They simply do not care about good employees / bad employees. They just want to drive people out to avoid severance and UI.
Otis sets the example (of bad management) and it cascades down through the RVPs and DMs.
Most of the execs and many DMs, GMs and assistants can not even display basic human decency, much less show any appreciation. Right now they want the toxic culture in place to drive people out.
Maybe, somewhere down the line when the close enough stores and transform into the showroom atmosphere they want, they will start caring about morale and possibly get rid of Otis, but I doubt it.
That's if they are in business at all.
It is not just the stores, employees in other divisions are treated like trash as well. The common denominator is Ron. He allows Otis and Shira and other top leadership to treat people like trash, all in the name of greed.
Nothing will change with this company....it will continue it's downward spiral. Competitors taking market share is a problem, but the bigger problem is the huge morale issue persistent through every division in the company.
