Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

Any more layoffs planned at western digital in 2016?

Does anyone know if there are more layoffs planned for 2016? Trying to buy a house but I need to know if there are more layoffs this year.

If you're at SanDisk or WD, consider keeping an eye out for openings at Kingston Technology in Fountain Valley. We'd love to consider you for a job. http://kingston.com under "careers".

Thanks very much for your consdieration!

please look at WD investor info for lay-offs

http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/WDC/2070925902x0x888718/2A0B048E-0BEC-470B-ABDC-D6C37F047235/FY16Q3_QFS_Version_1_FINAL.pdf

You can see the timing, when lay-offs (OpEx savings) as suppossed to be achieved

(2/3 by Q2 2017 , rest by 2018)

Opex saving = 400$/year. Look at the Opex ( =570x4 Mio). This needs to be reduced, but has not been done yet.

WD already promises to the investor

Yes, additional RIF going to happen.

On the HDD side with shrinking TAM, cost synergies need to be realized faster than original planned. More large headcount RIFs are coming. A TAM shrinking faster than projected also means that original synergy targets have to be updated, and headcount need to scale properly to the size of the business.

With Sandisk, there will also be layoffs. Just look at what has been publicly disclosed on synergies.

Sandisk acquisition may affect Sandisk side & probably a little bit HGST SDD side. Other than that, I don't think there is any planned layoff at this point. But if TAM is keep shrinking, layoff will be inevitable.

If you are younger than 40, don't work at hdd industry anymore. If you already work in wd as a hdd engineer, go find another area job now for your future. If you work at the last minute until layoff, you are extremely hard to find other area job. The more knowledge you gain from hdd, the more difficult you will get another area job. Layoff twice a year becomes a routine for wd the following years.

I wouldn't buy a house until the dust settles. The dust is only picking up and you haven't hit the eye of the storm yet. You're only at the outer rim. The eye of the storm is when Sandisk deal closes and the VPs and stuff start traveling back and forth discussing re-org/layoff procedures.

Observe the HR department. See how busy they are. Make friends with them or have an affair with one of the pretty ladies. They may just leak the list of people who will be laid off. :)
