Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Did Murthy just get absolutely humiliated today?

During the open forum Murthy went into great detail about the "new" strategy. After a lot of flowery language (not the usual Murthy flowery language) and must sweating it was over. We were all stunned and felt stupid we couldn't follow this visionary. Until someone asked the question "what's new apart from never ending rounds of layoffs" - the applause spoke volumes!

This is indeed something an Israeli will do. In an Israeli company it would have passed well with management. In Intel, I'm not so sure.

The comment "English is not his first language" was with respect to the question asker. He had a very slight accent and sounded Isreali to me, but I could've wrong.

"I'm 1dwu. Adjectives and adverbs help to describe the situation for people who didn't see it. He did fumble on the question a little, possibly due to English not being his first language, I"

Murthy is British. I'm pretty sure English is his first language.

@2wji 1dwu again, no worries :) As expected, nerves are a bit frayed on here given what's going on. While I think BK and company are the worst leaders we've ever seen, I still try to be fair about things, especially when people like the ISP folks really want to know and can't watch for themselves. So it's all good, wish you the best.

@1dwu,

I apologize. I went a bit sarcastic because emotions are running high. Media in my part of world is extremely dishonest and has the habit of foisting their own opinion and bias by using unnecessary adjectives, double quotes, words like allegedly etc.

I am sorry. I did mean offense in my previous post. I take that back. I hope Intel turns out well.

@1gyc I'm 1dwu. Adjectives and adverbs help to describe the situation for people who didn't see it. He did fumble on the question a little, possibly due to English not being his first language, I don't know exactly why. And his remark about the layoffs was given after a stall that seemed like uncertainty (perhaps on how to phrase it, again I can't say) and he looked to the side as he said it (which is a cue of an offhand statement). Either way, I stand by the description, and any honest person who saw it happen would do the same. I did my best to accurately describe things in an unbiased way and I think I did so quite well. Only thing I might have left out was that the reports of Murthy sweating the whole time were very accurate.

My description of "fumbling" and "offhandedly" do nothing to take away from the guts required to ask the question. Re-read what I wrote, nowhere will you find anything questioning the guy or his guts. He went up there to ask a tough question that nobody yet asked, no doubt about it. Good for him.

Murthy humiliated himself.

Sometimes layoffs and reorganizations are necessary. That's business and Intel's been through it before.

But it's always been coupled with a coherent plan and strategy to achieve the plan.

That's what's lacking. And why the question (and non-answer) were spot on.

The emperor has no clothes.

HR is in force minimizing the impact of the question asked by one of the few brave employees left hopefully this does not impact him/her in any way.

The man knew what he was doing. He's a sharp guy.

Those who kept saying he quit or was fired obviously don't know who he is.

Troll who gave the wrong/made-up name probably just want to confuse people and/or get the thread killed.

By the way, "Chris Simmons" doesn't exist in the Intel database. Whoever's trolling's gonna have to get past me to spread misinformation.

@1dwu,

Thanks for your answer. However you have used too many adjectives and adverbs which makes me a bit queasy. "fumbling" question, "offhandedly" says and so on. That question was a real gutsy question and the applause shows general distrust on management (for the time being).

On a different note, BK and Murthy are perfectly entitled to do whatever they want to do as they have the responsibility to get a job done. They are accountable to us as shareholders but not accountable to us as employees. I like BK's QGS sessions and not convinced yet that he is a bozo. Murthy needs to be given some time.

We employees may not like it and we are free to vote with our feet. Free-market-101 basically.

For those who didn't (or can't) view it, here's a rough outline of what happened. If you can view the replay, it's at 39:30. The replay doesn't appear to be edited in post-production.

  • Guy in audience at a mic asks a fumbling question along the lines of "I don't see much difference in this strategy compared to what we've heard each year" then offhandedly says "except for the project cuts and layoffs every year".

  • Audience applauds for about 3 seconds. I'm fairly sure it's the only time they applauded during the Q&A. The audience member in line for the mic behind the guy got a bit wide-eyed and laughed, as did a few people in the background.

  • Guy appeared to immediately walk back to his seat, probably realizing what he just asked. But the camera was changing to Murthy at that point so it's hard to tell.

  • Murthy talked about how they must not have been clear and basically gave a quick recap of his vision in different terms.

For what it's worth, I didn't really see the people sitting on stage getting nervous about the question. I think the comment saying so was a bit wishful.

@1yfz, @bkw,

If the guy who asked the question has indeed been fired, it is a shame for all of us who are/had-been proudly associated with Intel. I have difficulty believing that the open-forum-question-asker has been fired. Nobody can stoop that low.

@njn,

I have the same question. 2006 SET actions were supposed to have guard-rails to prevent future headcount explosion. That promise was violated. Who takes ownership of that fiasco? Nobody does and that is the real tragedy.

The new constructive confrontation value?

Q: WTF?

A: you're fired

Hard for me to believe anyone would be shown the door just for asking a challenging question.

Oh my god!! I just saw the video. It was digusting. Verbal diarrhea. Just some reharsed statements and nothing concreet. Same crap since BK became ceo. If what they said in that open forum is new strategy then what the hell they were doing all these years? Murty did not answer the question, just gave some reharsed vague speech. That is the clear sign that none of those guys on that stage know what they are doing. But they make millions.

Whether you (we) like it or not - Murthy has the whip now and has a 2 year time window to prove himself. In some sense, he is cleaning the Mobile mess that is causing a blow back across entire Intel. The question we have to ponder is how did the HR and CFO allow head count balloon by 10k after 2000's SET? Why is Richard Taylor still there??

Was the person who basically asked Murphy something like, "you have no strategy other than layoffs ?", really fired after the open forum ?

Murthy did not leave on good terms, the details were not disclosed but a widely accepted story is that he was asked to leave. You can read between the lines here and see if for yourself (departure memo):

"In other news Murthy is prohibiting open forum questions unless he approved ahead of time. "

And the "open forum" is now, officially, a dog-and-pony show for upper management grandstanding. It has been heading this way for some time. I remember and sincerely miss the days of the Craig-and-Andy open forums.

Personally I don't think Murthy will last that long @Intel. He digged his own grave by firing people. They will back stab him to death. This is not Qualcomm folks. Wait and see.
