What a bunch of morons running this company. It's mistake after mistake with this bunch. And now to layoffs and higher prices in order to makeup for the mishandling of this dying business. How can someone do such an awful job, destroy a company and still keep their job? You are a bunch of failures.

Shareholders need to make Staples know they have no confidence in Ron.... Remove him from CEO and Chairman.
John Wilson who runs Europe on $3.5m a year had a 4 year plan that went from bad to worse,it just loses money, but hardly surprising he didnt want to get out.Plenty of people were circling to take out UK retail the biggest lossmaker but they wouldnt talk to them. They will have to grovel now as their legs are wide open.
You are so point on with everything in your post. I think there was a point where this company had a chance of "reinventing" itself. But I think there is no possible way they will be around now in the next 5-10 years. Concerned for my job, but it may just be a blessing in disguise. Everyone is just anxiety riddled, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think this company needs to be led by someone young with a forward mentality and a concrete, thought out strategy to compete in an industry that has changed.
Coming from contract, the executives lost total sight as to the direction of the company. Quarter in and quarter out, Europe dragged Staples down and we questioned, why do we stay there? Quarter in and quarter out we heard about another strategic iniative that they would roll out, only for it to fail. We heard we'll expand by making complimentary aquisitions of furniture companies, facilities, and expand into other business related areas, none of which really happened. My understanding is they POed WB Mason during acquisition talks, Mason walked away and is now expanding into the Great Lakes area. They sold off print which they never clearly explained why.
This time next year, this is going to be a much, much smaller company. You can't hire 1,000 midmarket account managers and cut $300 million in expenses, they numbers don't add up, unless you trim the fat at the RSD level and above. Long term, I think you'll see retail gone and only be a online presence. Staples will have to become what Corporate Express was, strictly a contract player and nothing more.
