With Broxton and SoFIA SoCs gone from the pipeline, how does this affect the modem win for the next iPhone? Can the comm effort still be successful even with the SoC projects killed?

Basically, a better way to think of this is that SoCs give access to the mid / low tier markets. This in turn drives volume and which in turn allows the modem to be deployed in various kinds of radio environs. I suspect getting bugs reported over a 4 to 5 year time span has significantly matured the QCOM modem IP (in addition, of course, to the feature leadership, a organically grown and optimized area and power architecture).
QCOM, in aggregate, would have occupied ~1.5B+ LTE sockets in the past five years while Intel has about 5-10M largely driven by the single meaningful win in Zenfone 2. So maintaining high tier modem IP without access to the infrastructure and feedback a large base brings has to be tricky.
There is no modem win for the next iPhone. We are about two generations behind QCOM, and show no signs of catching up.
Just fire Aisha Evans and get on with support for the new four pillars.
