Hey guys, looking for some advice here, hopefully from someone with first-hand knowledge at INTC. My situation is i'm 49, Gr8 and just offered VSP due to 'too long grade'. I am not ready to retire yet, and would love to stay 3+ more years at least to get to rule of 75 and another sabbatical. My question is has anyone seen successfully taken a demotion of grade level and or pay and transferring to a new job internally ? I would try for a role where I could learn some more marketable skills. I feel my prospects for getting a prompotion or stock level 1or 2 for next year where I am is not that great, I have kind of topped out where I am and not wanting ISP next year. Thanks.

Too long in grade,
What quartile are you in, pay-wise? If you're in Q4 (high end) you may be out of luck. Unless, you want to take a pay cut. You can extend your useful life by demoting, but as was mentioned, you can transfer laterally into another skills job. I did this every five years and felt like I was challenged (and slipped the hangman's noose.)
OP: can you share your time in grade so We understand "too long in grade"?
I applied for a grade 7 position as a grade 9 and settled as a grade 8. Never looked back.. I'll be taking the ERP. SO YES it was good move on my part...
Did it myself Gr9 to Gr8 and it prolonged my career many more years in a grade level that "fit" me better. But be the one to initiate this and not your manager. You don't want to be hit by the bus - better to drive it.
BTW - I've know a few folks to do this in order to shift gears or to move to a different part of the company in a different field. It's playing the long game, and can be a career booster if you are "stuck". It's like needing to use second gear to get out of the mud, so you can power on to a new journey/career path that you want to pursue.
@ xzl. Meant " too long in grade"
Stop being a f---ing pussy and man up.
You will not be able to 'coast' in any grade. If you're hoping for that take the package. If not find a new gig after this purge and prepare yourself to do actual work. Forget about the downgrade IMO. Honestly there is not a big difference between grade 7 and 8.
I am GR8, new at INTC. What does "too long Grade" mean?
A few years back I knew a person who received a demotion with an improvement plan. A year later he was out the door. You are risking a lot by trying to play a numbers game. The demotion would also hurt you for future opportunities. Better to take the VSP because you are a marked man.
Yes.
I know of such case from about 8 years ago. Both new manager and employee are happy (as of two weeks ago).
Though, I don't know how would they count years in grade with demotion.
U R in very tough position, my friend... It is all Ur mind, tricking U.
But... I would advice you to stay... And try to survive these 3 years. Let me tell you the following: U R the bad ass surviving on Ur timing benefits, protected as Polar Bear. If you continue to play this game, now I'll call it "Cat and Mouse", U might survive, and send all this to Hell House.
U need to anticipate... Things significantly changed. Ur ass, dude, is on the line (of fire), better start doing some REAL work there, to make it thru these 3 years (IF???)... OK?
Does this (what I wrote here) sound reasonable?!
