Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Who are the lucky ones?

Back in February, many of us were told that we were going to be let go on 8/31. It was hard to accept, but at least we knew that we had some time to get our affairs in order, and figure things out, as well as go through the steps to accept our fate. Recently we received notification that the 8/31 date has been rescinded and now the date is unknown. Totally had to rethink our fate with the new news. Now rumor is floating around that some of those may be rescinded altogether, so basically we are back at step 1 - we have no idea if we have a future with Devon or not. The amount of stress that this has put on my family has been detrimental, and caused so many additional issues that could have easily been avoided. My question is to those who have been told they are "safe" - do you actually feel safe? Does anyone believe anything that management has to say anymore? How can this company be trusted when they are treating our lives like a game of chess? Would anyone be happy to stay if you have sat around since February waiting to be let go only to be told in the future, "nevermind, just kidding, welcome back to the "TEAM"?

Thank you, Sarah, for your courage through the dark years. I can't help you with what you must soon face, except to say that the future is not set. You must be stronger than you imagine you can be. You must survive, or I will never exist.

The winners are definitely the ones who were released in February. I sit around all day listening to people complain about how hard they have to work now when most of the people let go would have been willing to do twice the work for less pay and be thankful for the job. They let go the good ones while keeping the boss's buddies who think they are above working for their money. But hey, that's the "New" Devon that they talked so much about. I wonder what that tower will be called in a couple of years, it certainly won't be Devon by looks of the remaining skeleton crew.

Fascinating to hear a global conspiracy theory answer to a problem brought about by simply buying high and selling low.

Next time oil rises remember that it will go back down. One other thing is to avoid working for companies that build giant towers.

But most importantly, buy low sell high!

I was one of the ones let go in the purge. I come out here to keep up on the gossip every now and then to see what is going on. It seemed bad at the time but being let go was one of the best things to ever happen to me. Found another job making very close to what I was making at Devon and I never stress about the price of oil. I of course root for Devon to be very success full because I have been fully vested for years of service. It is scary, but if you decide to leave you won't miss it like people think. Devon was a great place to work but do your self and your family a favor and don't let it ruin your life with worry. It is really not worth it.

You are not going to get the answers you want, for multiple reasons. It's an election year. Management doesn't know what agenda the next administration will have and their stance on energy policy. Nothing was learned from experiences of the 1980's. The impact of the STACK play debt and the GeoSouthern debt vs. staffing requirements and increasing prices for supply chain will keep the bean counters busy trying to come up with budgets for the next two years. You've got a job. So many others don't. It's too late to live Dave Ramsey's way, but you've got plenty of time to dig yourself out of your personal debt. Get that head down and get to work.

Actually it's a pretty good strategy to break people down so much that they want to quit and you don't have to pay their Severance I applaud Devon for using such a creative method to torture their staff to leave., I always thought that s* had that kind of nazi-style capability and now I see they really really do. It wasn't that much different when they shut down the Houston office, similar logic maybe a little more indecision and certainly year long torture.
