Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

Where's all the chairs & directors...not to mention the instructors?

looks like Norwood, Mass has at least 3 chairs empty:

many more, at other locations (plus empty ones they won't even bother to fill)

there's a bunch missing directors too:

Well...no matter...just keep listing the old ones, ghosts are cheap labor...

@1koc, I have seen all these things signs of poor education practices myself, as adjunct ITT-Tech math and science teacher. Except the adjuncts don't have different rules, as you were told! But some adjuncts - and other faculty as well I am sure - are easily manipulated.

At my campus, I taught science for years before taking on math classes. I lasted one quarter of teaching Math One before finally becoming totally fed up with ITT-Tech.

Many reasons exist for not wanting to teach math at ITT-Tech. A few years ago, at a faculty meeting, I overheard a math teacher and campus director talking about a recent math final. It turns out the math instructor was letting students retake the final. I specifically asked the director, in front of everyone, if it is "okay" for students to retake final exams at ITT-Tech. I wanted to see her response. And she flat out said, "uh, yes!"

If you look at the official policy for instructors to request "program level" curriculum changes, you will see it involves writing a several page document, and submitting it to dean first. Then maybe a curriculum committee will look at it. Obviously, adjunct faculty getting paid ridiculously low wages as is are not going to spend days preparing such a document!

ITT-Tech's downfall became sealed as they became more authoritarian, and less respectful of contributions of faculty on their campuses. ITT-Tech doesn't have anything else going for it!

No - the same director was several years and recently also took over the dean duties. Too little too late so won't save the campus. In any case, ITT's days are numbered.

Camden,

I think the following contribute to poor NCLEX outcomes: course content that is not reflective of content on board exams, lack of faculty control over courses, under experienced and overworked faculty, lack of opportunities for new faculty to learn and develop effective teaching techniques, lack of space to meet privately with students, pressure to pass students, students who are allowed to enroll though the entrance HESI indicates problems with math or reading ability. No remediation courses offered to help identified students with math and reading before starting class. Lack of support for faculty when they attempt to keep order in the classroom, or stop the cheating (which is rampant).

After a year of teaching, I put my resume out to find a new job when I overheard the Dean tell non-nursing faculty to change a course grade because "we need her to pass math." When I expressed my outrage to the nursing chair over this, I was told that the adjuncts who teach support courses operate differently. How ludicrous! That, qtr I decided to deploy my own math test on the first day of class. Greater than half the class could not convert a gram to a milligram!

"The director/dean position at Norwood OH is open"

...didn't they just have someone new? Maybe it was open then filled. Seems like that was mentioned

@HQQgfBr-1lwf, it looks like the Norwood campus NCLEX pass rate is only 50% already. And they still have a consent decree over their heads.

The director/dean position at Norwood OH is open so yet another increase in workload for the few who remain . That won't help NCLEX pass rates!

It appears that all of the ITT Tech Breckinridge schools in Ohio are failing..........................................................http://www.nursing.ohio.gov/PDFS/Education/NCLEX/2016Q01RN.pdf

@HQQgfBr-1lmf, I wonder if these is happening at other ITT Tech/Breckinridge campuses. From the SEC documents I have seen, it appears that many of the nursing schools do not have the NCLEX pass rates they need to maintain ACICS accreditation.

I work in the Nursing School. We are required to have a chair by the BON. When our chair gave notice, the director made known that they would prefer to hire her replacement from within. I think this was to save money, since the faculty member chosen was only to receive an 8% raise and continue her teaching load. The chosen new faculty/chair person is not respected by faculty or students. The new chair is a stool pigeon, backstabber, suck-up and bully--perfect, right? Concerns over this new appointment were raised and one faculty member quit. Other faculty heading for the exits are being told to wait it out for a few months--Why? Management will sack the chair "if it doesn't work out" they said. I wonder if there is another reason for appointing a cheap but bad chair: maybe they know that we may not be long in operation?

In addition to the vacancies there are many chair positions which were simply eliminated or merged!
