Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Is this legal?

DVU Colleagues,

Our students inspire us every day and we want to provide a way to help them inspire others.

Beginning June 6, 2016, an email campaign will be sent to existing students to refer a friend, family or co-worker to enroll at DeVry or Keller. When the referred party accepts the referral and submits an inquiry form, the person who made the referral will receive a gift card or gift bag.

This referral program pilot will be conducted from 6/6/16-8/29/16 and

the referred party must submit an inquiry form by 8/29/16.

I agree, it seems perfectly legal since it's only the referring party who gets the incentive. I'm not a lawyer but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

If you really think about it, the Advisor is really rewarding the Referring Party....not the Referral (the Referred)...which means that this may be legal and ethical. Just my thougths.

@HLv6Ij2-2ylg, Inside Higher education may look into this "refer a friend" issue, but I doubt it. Most stuff just gets swept under the rug. ...............................https://twitter.com/insidehighered/status/740246462236381184

I don't think the question is regarding whether it's true. Of course it's true, unless "DVU Communications" is pulling our legs for some reason. The question the OP asked was "Is it legal?" It's a valid question considering some referral programs of this nature have been found to violate state laws, but I think that's just in certain industries or for certain professions. I really don't know. I can't imagine DVU taking any more legal risks considering all the legal battles they're already facing.

Years ago when i was an advisor, DVU ran this refer-a-friend program. it was phased out because it deemed an incentive when generating referral business.

Sounds like a joke but DeVry is desperate so maybe it's true. What's in the gift bag, a Starbucks gift card?
