Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

WD/HGST Careers websites shows many job openings.

Are these "real" job postings, that the company intends to hire and fill up?

Is there any hiring freeze ?

Can any former recruiter at any company shed light on these contradictions ?

I have always been intrigued by companies posting many jobs on their websites, despite no active ongoing hiring...

The company is hoping that no one would apply for the position that they have posted, and if someone does, they will find a way to declare him/her unqualified.

These ads are part of the "labor certification" process to obtain an H1-B visa (work visa) for a foreign worker that they have already decided to hire for the position . U.S. immigration authorities require companies to place such ads and demonstrate that the company "could not find a U.S. worker who could do the job", and therefore justify the need to hire a foreign worker for the position. That is why the company hopes that nobody would apply and if someone does, the find a reason to disqualify him/her.

This is an abuse that is rampant in tech industry. They bring in cheap foreign workers to the U.S to replace U.S. workers.

Sounded like WD was required to post the positions to maintain some kind of tax status or something.

In essence the reasons jobs are posted is not to hire a real person but to satisfy other rules ?

I applied for posted positions a few weeks ago and got a call from a guy in HR. He said the positions were basically entry level and for interns although I didn't read them as such when I applied. He mentioned something about "class B" but I'd never heard of it before. He then asked form questions about my employability and qualifications. Well nice to at least get personal contact as a result of my submittal. Sounded like WD was required to post the positions to maintain some kind of tax status or something. Been over a year looking for me and nothing serious has come up.
