Thread regarding Office Depot Inc. layoffs

Depot considers closing Max stores.

This could result in all Max stores closing over a 3 year time frame. Even the 120 stores that signed 5 year leases this year. The logistics aren't working. The cost to convert systems is over the expected revenue of keeping door open.

There were 3 stores in our area. 2 signed 5 year leases. One closed. All Max stores. Now the two stores share the brunt of costs that 3 stores used to. They hardly made money before. This is crazy stuff.

Were they 5year extensions or deals cut with LL for this time frame. Barnes and Noble and LL's are doing similar 2yr deals.

When Circuit City closed all stores and went online only it was a joke - the CC name was bought by Tiger Direct, which also bought the CompUSA name to use online.

This comment would have made sense if the merger went through; not now. It looks like Office Depot is going the way of Best Buy; one city, one store. In some cities the only presence Office Depot has is the Office Max so they really can't shut all of them unless they plan to leave the community altogether. These companies make a bundle from corporate/government contracts so they will keep some brick and mortars open and use them as a tax write off so they don't go the way of Future Shop, Circuit City etc. Once FS and CC went to online only that was it for them; ODP and SPLS know this and won't make the same mistake.
