Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Guess the retention program didn't mean jack for young professionals. Devon ruined me.

I lost my job after 2 summer internships and 2 years at Devon. My family is across the country in a different state. My girlfriend left me. No one is hiring a Petroleum Engineer with 2 years experience, and I haven't been able to get an interview outside industry. I needed emergency surgery after my insurance ran out and I have $40k in federal student loans to pay back.

I have nothing now. I poured myself into trying to be a good employee and fit the mold. I was never given a chance to fight for my job. Just told to pack my things and get the f--- out.

Engineer, pay the monthly fee to Taben, for COBRA. It isn't too late. And, yeah it is the good ole boys system that determined who stayed. I was in the field, (closer to the wellhead) but didn't save me. I would love to have your credentials. That engineering degree is still worth its weight in gold. Just believe in your skills, find a recruiter on linkedin or wherever. Two years is still experience.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I'm standing in the back ground reading all the's negative about Devon... I had spent 35 years with Devon and 2 years with another oil/gas company after I left Devon. You guys need to understand the things that are happening is not personal. I ve been through a lot of layoffs at the field level and corporate level. Yes I was lucky to make through all these years. Devon has been one of the best company I had worked for. Sure a lots of people gets hurt but you need to understand you were the ones who decided to go into this profession without looking at what has happened in the last 37 years with this type of profession. Devon is only trying to survive. Sure things are looking better today but tomorrow or next year could be different. Devon is not the only oil and gas company having problems. Take a look at APC site!!! These guys are having the same problem as Devon... I'm sure even the smaller companies are having even more issues. Theses guys that kept there jobs with Devon should be thankful!!! And should not be saying bullshit about the guys that lost there jobs. Even the guys that lost there jobs should not be talking trash to the guys that were lucky enough to keep there job. Like I had mentioned above you decided this profession and you should know what has happened the last 37 years... yes, the guys that kept there jobs were lucky. This does not mean that they were better than the one who lost there job.

Good luck to all...

Don't listen to the idiots on here, most have the i.q of a piss ant.

Keep your head up, things will turn around.

I was also let go, I still struggle with it from time to time, but for the most part I just try to stay positive.

It could always be worse,at least Devon gave us our severance packages, without that I and many others would be really screwed. I have friends who were laid off from other companies with only the vacation they had accrued.

Stay positive, and it doesn't hurt to ask the man upstairs for guidance. Things will get better.
