Hi, in my department the people laid off are older than the ones who didn't get laid off. Federal law outlaws age discrimination, but it's so obvious in the tech industry, as documented by Forbes and so many other publications. What are you seeing in your departments? Is this just my department, or are older workers the first WD lays off in other departments, too? If this is a company-wide pattern, I may consider asking the EEOC to investigate. Thanks.

Yes, file a charge with EEOC. You are not alone. Many departments of WD have targeted older workers during layoffs. It does appear to be a company-wide trend. When you were laid off, you should have gotten a document that stated the ages of those who were, and we're not laid off in your division. Submit this with your filing with EEOC.

At HGST it is more who you know than your experience. So if you are a new graduate and have done some internships in the field you want to work in, be friendly and helpful as well as technical. A friend in a high position to recommend is better than anything you could put on a resume. Always has, always will be.

this opens up opportunities for rookies to get their foot in the door with less pay. most tech companies are looking for experienced fresh graduates, but WDC is fair, understands the situation and love to give opportunities to rookies with no experience.
I always asked myself this question: How the hell do you gain experience if every tech org is looking for fresh graduates with experience? No one bothers to even look at my sons resume. It never made sense to me

Maybe it means they've paid their dues and should be the last to be laid off.
That means they make more money ...so yeah ,they deserve to be laid off
