Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

You are a number.....

I was the BEST on my team. No doubt. I carried them on my back. Outstanding performance reviews too.

I was let go. Why? MONEY. I was the cheapest to buy out. I saw the most effective people in my department leave. Devon hired the best people, but kept a lot of trash when things turned bad. Not a good business plan going forward. To those of you that stayed...your incompetence is already noted.

What I find amusing is that there are some people who didn't get let go and have the audacity to mention to their co- workers they knew rhey would not be let go because Devon needed them. Then have no compassion for thise that need a job.

Oh well. Rant over

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's not worth reading. [reading]... Yup, I was right.

Boy that was REAL bad. Same arrogance, only difference was that the so called manager has more of it, and hides it poorly.

Not only does he have a good GPA. He works well with people. Knows how to support his team. And knows how to make a substantial impact. BECAUSE HE IS THAT GOOD! (IN HIS MIND) HAHA!

Someone needs to kick him in the pussy! Hard!

Sounds like you just proved his/her point. Not your idea - so it must not be worth reading.

That so called manager below sounds like a doofus. I lost interest after the second sentence, thus probably nothing important to say.., and just long winded.

I'm a manager who works for another company but who has been put in the position of having to decide who gets laid off during similar cutbacks. In both rounds, I elected to lay off the people who identified themselves as "the best" because they were so only in their own minds. In reality, these people were not able to effectively act as part of the team, presented themselves with a level of arrogance that made it impossible to work with them (much less be in the same room as them), felt that any idea which wasn't theirs was inferior and expressed that thought very often and very loudly, and just generally presented themselves as giant blowhards.

Regarding GPA - I graduated with a masters in petroleum engineering and managed to maintain an average of 3.82 across both undergrad and grad. Big f---ing deal. Am I proud of that accomplishment? Hell yes. Does it in any way make me a more effective employee? Only if I can work with my co-workers, support my team and use what i learned in an academic bubble called college to make a substantial impact to tl my company's performance.

So, in summary, you likely were not your department's top performer and nobody gives a flying sh-- about your GPA. Very sorry for the situation you're in, but it's time to let the anger go and find somewhere new to direct your energy.

Did he have a 3.73? That would explain it.

From an EP Engineer standpoint: they let me go (3.72 GPA) and kept the mouth breathing engineer who listens to his iPod all day and hums to himself. Their loss...

Actually, I AM in their place. I thought I was safe in my position, but no those managers gotta keep their bonuses rolling in. I have talked to numerous people who will not go back in to oil and gas. So, Devon will hire newbies and train all over again. I can't afford to be angry, went through that, now need a clear mind.

I am very bitter and very mad. What Devon did was just plane wrong. Laying off someone with leukemia, someone fighting for their life. Really !! There are many things they could have done first and didn't even try. Early retirement, salary cut. furloughs, why were none of these things an option? Other companies have used these cost saving strategies and retained their talent. OH NO not Devon. Just get rid of the sick and old. Dave Hagar you should be ashamed. Karma will catch up with you some day just like it did with Aubrey.

Until you are in their place, you don't know how you would feel either. It is natural to be a little mad and bitter. And some very good employees were sacrificed in this layoff while some were retained that were way less talented - not all, but in some cases. It's all part of the healing process.

Come on man. Take the high road and maintain some dignity. Jobs were consolidated. Fight off the bitterness and you will be better prepared for interviews.

Have a little humility. If you was the BEST and carried everyone on your back, the team would fold. I think they are getting by just fine without you. Just cause we still have a job does not mean we are incompetent. Your self proclaimed greatness is already noted.
