I'm a manager who works for another company but who has been put in the position of having to decide who gets laid off during similar cutbacks. In both rounds, I elected to lay off the people who identified themselves as "the best" because they were so only in their own minds. In reality, these people were not able to effectively act as part of the team, presented themselves with a level of arrogance that made it impossible to work with them (much less be in the same room as them), felt that any idea which wasn't theirs was inferior and expressed that thought very often and very loudly, and just generally presented themselves as giant blowhards.
Regarding GPA - I graduated with a masters in petroleum engineering and managed to maintain an average of 3.82 across both undergrad and grad. Big f---ing deal. Am I proud of that accomplishment? Hell yes. Does it in any way make me a more effective employee? Only if I can work with my co-workers, support my team and use what i learned in an academic bubble called college to make a substantial impact to tl my company's performance.
So, in summary, you likely were not your department's top performer and nobody gives a flying sh-- about your GPA. Very sorry for the situation you're in, but it's time to let the anger go and find somewhere new to direct your energy.
