Wow, this board has gone from talking about layoffs or rumored layoffs to an outright b$$$$hfest.

I worked for Staples for many years. I believed in the company until after Corporate Express was purchased, then the company changed, and changed for the worse! In its try to become the best at what it does, Staples is being the best at laying people off, screwing with the people who helped build the company and just in general it has not been the place that it used to be. I wish the people luck that are still around. If it comes to another mass layoff, and you are one of them, your resume better be tight, because the water will be churning with others who are in need of a job, and now you are one of many.
Leave when you find something, get your resume out there. Make sure you know aspects about your job other than the Staples way of doing it. If you are in sales, know how to really sell, if you are in networking, know the standards. Remember not everybody is a Staples (thank the Maker for that)!
If you are a YES man, you better be able to go beyond the YES and actually be able to do your job! Damn idiots that Staples has!
Not a BS FEST. Whoever started this post is from management and does not want to face reality. Whoever you are, even if a fellow GM, you are delusional if you think this company is going to survive under the present leadership. Otis is a pompous, condescending idiot who is here for only one reason, I will leave that to you to figure out. Vinnie Servello suffers from Napoleonic complex and wants all of his region to be the best but he and his tribe of DM's do it with veiled threats and really does not support the General Managers. Brian Legg is a cheerleader who knows things are being done incorrectly in Region 1 but he lacks the ba**s to report it because he is afraid of Vinnie. I have never seen a more dysfunctional company in my life so whoever started this post, you either are drinking the Koolaid or a complete fool.
Of course there is a bash fest - Besides layoffs in general, this company treat employees like trash.
Lay off just under 500 people in Jan so they don't have to notify the government, and also avoid all comments to the press. Reminds me of that scene in The Big Short. When Lehman Bros. goes bust and everyone is walking out after being let go, they have some monkey in the lobby telling people to go directly to their transportation, do not talk to the press....
Look what they did to SDOs!!!
Lay off drivers in favor of 3rd party deliveries, and then call them back when the 3rd party can't handle the load? Screwed over employees and huge customer issues.
That should of been thought out a little more and those that decided in favor of SDO closures should of been fired.
Store staff are being hammered with pressure to sell snake oil and push high interest credit cards.
(kind of like an investment advisor pushing CDOs in 2007). Pay roll gets cut, but expectations go up.
Good, long term, dedicated people get harassed by their RVP on a daily basis over store conditions that are better than 99% of the company, just to make the person quit. If/when that fails, out come the PIPs for BS reasons, when the next store over looks worse and is comping down, but that GM makes $10,000 less so they get a pass.
Guess what - harassed GM gets let go - they hire some guy off the street and pay $20k less than the original GM and store sales go down $100k the next year. It happened....
The bashing is because many people on this board worked for Staples when it was a GOOD company.
Now it has turned into a toxic, deceitful monster and people are constantly looking over their shoulder.
Not to mention that with all the pressure on easy techs and CPC to sell, they get worthless Star Points for their efforts.
Go back to cash based sales incentives!
Yes, it is , for the simple fact that the leadership causing / allowing Staples downward spiral to continue is continually REWARDED for failure. At the same time, GMs that do their jobs and run great stores continually get screwed over on their own bonuses.
People simply want to do their jobs without being harassed over trivial things and working 70+ hours a week because of no payroll and constant threats of Otis / RVP visits.
Ron and his cronies need to GO!
Hopefully after the buyout is quashed for good the BoD will finally step in and do something about him.
If not, then shareholders need to do something about the BoD at the shareholder meeting.
