Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

Kevin Modany says typical campus has faculty chairs for every department. Does yours?

In today's press release, announcing release of ESI (ITT-Tech's) 2015 annual report, Mr. Modany says "We were particularly pleased with our financial results for the year given our ongoing utilization of institutional scholarships and awards to support our goal of making our educational offerings more affordable and accessible for our students. The 2015 results include approximately $220 million in institutional scholarships and awards to ITT Technical Institute students during the 2015 calendar year. We couldn't be more proud of our related affordability efforts and the work of our college faculty and staff towards solid student outcomes in an efficient manner that make these awards and scholarships possible."

TRANSLATION In other words, Kevin is proud he laid off all dedicated, full time academic personnel at my campus this past year, and only gave me a pay raise of 1% so my adjunct instructor per-course pay is still less than half the amount at local community college!

The 2015 annual report has a section describing faculty: "We hire faculty members for our education programs in accordance with criteria established by us, the accrediting commissions that accredit our campuses and the state education authorities that regulate our campuses. We hire faculty with relevant work experience and/or academic credentials to teach most technical subjects. Faculty members for our education programs at each campus typically include the chairperson for each school or education program and various categories of instructors, including full-time and adjunct."

TRANSLATION The word "typical" means a campus that exists in Mr. Modany's imagination. My campus has 5 programs, but no chairs. My campus has 30 or so adjunct faculty, but no full-time faculty. My campus has no dean, because that position is now called "dean/director."

One more quote from 2015 annual report: "The faculty and staff at each of our campuses strive to help students overcome obstacles to the completion of their education programs. As is the case in other postsecondary institutions, however, students often fail to complete their education programs for a variety of personal, financial or academic reasons. Student withdrawals prior to education program completion not only affect the students, they also have a negative regulatory and financial effect on the campus and the entire institution. To minimize these student withdrawals, each of our campuses devotes staff resources to assist and advise students regarding academic and financial matters. We encourage academic advising and tutoring in the case of students experiencing academic difficulties."

TRANSLATION At Mr. Modany's imaginary campus they have staff who are doing academic advising of students -- probably the imaginary chairs and imaginary full-time faculty. Maybe he is also imagining the dean isn't fulfilling role of director.

Sure, I am grateful I have had opportunity to teach students for several years as adjunct faculty. But I can only take so much. The CEO is being blatantly fraudulent, I believe. The pay is so low for instructors, who is going to teach classes at a bachelor degree level? What math instructors are going to be patient enough to deal with a curriculum that is not matched to non-traditional students, curriculum that is poorly designed? Who is going to tell prospective electronics students, signed up for ITT-Tech believing they can pursue a bachelor degree at their campus, that 10 campuses around the country began teach-outs recently, and 5 campuses dropped their bachelor degree programs, and electronics doesn't have an on-line bachelor degree option? Who is going to advise students that their credits will not transfer to other colleges (2 year or 4 year) because the admission standards, grading standards, and graduation standards, and curriculum content at ITT-Tech are not high to satisfy criteria of other institutions? Are the sales reps / admission staff / dean-director going to be transparent? Well, I am willing to be this honest, so am quitting when I finish this quarter before the last supervisor standing -- the dean/director/rep/whatever-- chews me out for jeopardizing the head count!

I would be surprised if that is "typical" anymore. Norwood, OH has lost all of the chairs other than Nursing (required to keep the OH Board of Nursing happy), and doesn't have a Dean nor an Assistant Dean anymore.

In other words, the only people left are the sales department and a few adjunct instructors. Most of the teaching staff who could actually teach left when they realized that the director only cared about how many students passed rather than any semblance of academic standards.

I am an adjunct at a campus that has around 200 students today. Used to be several hundred students in 2010. The associate dean was laid off years ago. The last 2 chairs were gone at end of 2015. They can't find instructors to teach the classes. For newest drafting and design instructor, they hired a recent drafting and design graduate (associate's degree) -- he had earned a bachelor many years ago in a different field, so meets minimum criteria. He is a really nice guy. But he couldn't find any other job since graduating a couple quarters ago, and likes teaching, so it seems like a win-win. BUT he has told me himself he doesn't feel qualified to teach half the classes he has been assigned, because he has no real experience in most of the topics. He says he has to learn the material as he is teaching it. Meanwhile he is looking for another job. Now get this -- the dean bestowed upon him new title of "Subject Matter Expert" in the drafting and design program, even though this instructor admitted to me "I'm no subject matter expert!" I am not sure if the title involves more pay - I doubt it - and he is not in a full-time position. I think this title is a way for ITT-Tech to save face, after getting rid of chairs, so they can claim they have "subject matter experts" on campus. MORE SMOKE and MIRRORS. Mr. Modany treats instructors the same way he treats students. Pumps them up with phony words, while delivering very little substance. So there are now phony "Subject Matter Experts" teaching at a a phony college, while Mr. Modany lines his pockets for as long as he can. I give this organization another year, then it will become a training institute. No way it can keep accreditation. Even the ACICS accreditors - the agency with low standards used by most for-profit schools -- has nearly every campus under heightened monitoring. Our campus offers bachelor in project management, and the chair for that program was laid off a couple years ago! Run from this place!

Our ADGS was fired the Friday before the new quarter began. The dean has no idea what he is doing, 2 chairs left at end of the last quarter as did one of the FACs and the registrar. This school is a terrible waste of time and money, we've been told by HQ we can't call it a college. The library databases are being cut drastically, Britannica Online isn't worth it, WTF?

This librarian, is ashamed that I have given so many years to such an awful company, I'm choosing unemployment over continuing. I just feel so bad for the students.

You know all they care about is profit at any cost. Ripping off students, ripping off the taxpayers, and yet people still think this place is going to survive. Every day yet another student comes forward and says enough with all the credit damage and collectors harassing them, comes forward to share what a sham program and complete lack of interest employers have, and says no to life crushing student loans this place used by the millions over the last 20 years.
