Thread regarding Anadarko Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Chewed up and spit out

I was laid off yesterday morning. Up till yesterday I was meeting vendors, negotiating contracts and working on projects that would extend to next year. I have worked on average 80hrs per week over the last 4 years. Our department did not add any bodies during the boom. We just absorbed the extra work. It appears that they laid off most of my department. So, who's going to manage our functions now? There is nobody left. Our work did not diminish during this down cycle. Also, we're was the integrity and trust? There is no Integrity in laying a person off with a canned speech and a blue folder. I feel used and disposed off.

20+ years, from the wonderful culture at WGR to a much different culture at APC. Truthfully it just never felt right. So I am glad to be gone. I feel the severance was fair, what I had a hard time with is what others have said - listening to a speech and having a hard time comprehending it because the department was shorthanded to begin with, hand over your badge and keys, shown the elevator. Very cold. The words were meaningless. I would have appreciated a sit-down with HR to help go over all the transition details, instead we have the packet to read and figure out. Not as easy as you think. But is anything anymore. Good luck all.

I was in the same boat. I worked 60+ hours a week for the last 10 years since I joined APC. On most Friday, I leave the office at 8:00pm to push as much AFEs out as possible. I was a production engineer (laid off this week). When times were good (good oil price) the boss was constantly urging us to exceed the target to reap more oil in the tank, when times were bad (like in the pass year), my boss pushed us to make more oil to offset the decreasing revenue. What a ride......

Let's apply statistics here....How many mangers were laid off vs workers on Thursday?

I only know of one in management and he probably elected to leave. I guess the managers are just that good and everyone else laid off was just that bad.

This company is on it's way out, like dust in the wind. Hopefully their antiquated corporate culture goes with them.

Look who crawled out from under the desk to protect their boss. Shouldn't you be working, insted of looking at this. You will be in the next round of layoffs, and it won't be as good as the first.

The staffing reduction decisions should have been made in the best interest of the company and not individuals.

They were. It's not your manager's fault that you don't realize you are complete sh-- at your job.

Every company has the same sob stories. Only those that do the real work got laid off and the only ones that kept their jobs are friends and family of the managers. It most be a global industry-wide conspiracy. Either that or you self-entitled little snowflakes aren't as special as you think you are. Good riddance, now APC can soar since it is no longer burdened with the rubbish.

I knew I would get cut and it had nothing to do with performance or work ethic. The lay offs offered my manager an option to end my career at APC to protect his turff like the gang member he is with his life long "buddy"/supervisor. Fairness was away on PTO for the past 6 weeks. The staffing reduction decisions should have been made in the best interest of the company and not individuals.

I was laid off this past Thursday morning. I spent several hours agonizing and feeling completely stressed out and anxious in my office, when all of a sudden there appears two people with a folder. I was read the canned speech, asked to hand over my ID card, told to come back and collect my things on Saturday, and walked to the elevator. Done. It was extremely degrading and disrepectful, although I'm glad it's over. These past six weeks have been a nightmare of stress, anxiety, little sleep, panic attacks at 1:00 AM, etc. It's time to move on. Integrity and Trust? Open Communication? I was stupid to believe that I was valued.

Working 80 hours a week for 40 hours of pay (assuming you're on salary). Life is short go live it. But if it fits you right to do it --- go for it.

You can probably thank our litigious society for the canned speeches. I'm sure there are many that would like to have said more but the risk of saying something that results in a lawsuit is too great. Anyway, you were losing your job. Is there really something that could have been said that would have made you feel better?

Move on people. Don't let it take you down...it will if you allow it.

If you voluntarily work 80 hrs. per week, then you should really consider going into business for yourself. You'll probably make more money if you just open up a couple of Subways. You've already done the hard part of sacrificing everything else in you life for work. You'll have full control over your own fate, and reap the rewards of your hard work. Good Luck!

I came from a different company to Anadarko, what a mistake that was. There was always animosity about where I came from including retaliation. I brought different ideas to the table and understood that this group was behind the times as to what was coming down the line. It doesn't matter on what you bring, it's about who your buddy's are. You can do great work and follow the core values with the best intent. But in the end, it is nothing. So I am glad I am gone, failure is still written on the wall.

I am terribly sorry for you. This is what I explained in my post about my father who was let go. He is 63, spent over 40 years in this industry, took so much pride in his work, yet was let go with a scripted speech and ''leave your keys at the door''. I realize there is no easy way to tell someone they are being let go, and Anadarko has been very good to my father in the past- but considering what he and I'm sure many many other employees have contributed to the field, it could have been a lot less cold and mechanical. He feels so deflated right now. I don't know your age, but I wish you well in finding work and recovering from this hit to the stomach.

So do I. Completely used. I am really struggling to have closer with what took place. Not to mention the rehearsed speech that was given when the reality is favortisim was rampant in these cuts.

I know how you feel. I was laid off last October. I actually asked about the work on my desk and did I need to let someone know what was going on, they said no. The laid off 20% of the company! Wow, was I dumb to think I was a valued employee.
