Very sad day, seeing reports of long-serving employees being tossed out just like that. The hard reality of IT. Who knows what this will trigger with other companies, if gov. does not step in.

Say to IBM to keep workers that they have no work for?
This is a false statement my job was not eliminated, IBM just wanted to eliminate my headcount. They will just force the remaining two workers to pick up the work, I feel sorry for them.
Like the Gov has a say. It's a free country... the most capitalist of all.... gov can't do sh!t...
When you had a sweet job... paid vacation, paid leave, health care... the gov gave you that... that's the extent of the gov reach....
If you have HCRA - healthcare reimbursement account - you pay into that account with every paycheck. Spend the FULL amount before you leave! Buy glasses! Figure out a way to spend it ALL! I was given that advice last year - I left in July, so had about half of the planned 2015 amount "in the bank." I spent the full amount -- and the person who gave me the advice was right, IBM never came after me for the other half of the money. They must somehow account for the full amount at the beginning of the year.
Anyhow, if you have an HCRA - try to spend it all! (Nothing to lose here. If they did come after you, you still got the tax break on the expenses. If they do not come after you - and I think they will not - then that's gravy.)
And how would the gov act here? Say to IBM to keep workers that they have no work for? They have been doing this in North Korea for decades now, it's not working well.
How about a proven concept of:
