You need to stay relevant and technology changes all the time. Look around? There is no single company that has loyalty any more and a lot of us float from a co to co and from a project to project – nothing new here. Be careful, trust nobody, make sure you charge for your services, stay valuable and relevant.
This is not just an IBM thing – all tech companies will can you in a snap if you lose your edge – so, yes, again, stay relevant. I am actually surprise to see that some folks have spent 20 years or more with IBM, I think that things move much quicker now and people move between companies.
So, given where we are – the most recent Resource Action will amplify things like this – there will be a lot of folks with legacy skills that will become irrelevant – and Ginni has stated that there is a ton of businesses that she wants to get out – if you are in one of them you will be gone in no time.
That’s just my two cents here, I am not trying to troll here or to berate anybody as I am a 25+ year veteran of the IT world, but at the same time I know that if I slow down for a moment I will be hosed in no time.
With this being said, shame on IBM and the severance package changes, I think that if someone has devoted decades of productive years to you, the company needs to recognize that and pay more than 30 days.
That’s plain stupid but that’s the world of IBM today.
