Yes, look at earnings. look at seagate, look at tam. as horrible as it is, it would be irresponsible not to do layoff to fit expenses to the shrinking market. seriously, what is the alternative?

Yup, that's the rumor May 4th. This layoff will be nasty after today's earnings. May the force be with you. Good luck.

When I was laid off a year ago they had me officially on the payroll for two months after being laid off. This way they could announce the layoff for the WARN act the required two months before I was officially laid off. So I got two months pay plus the normal severance package.

Thank you for mentioning the EDD website. I read the WARN notice report a little differently (the WARN notice is the required 60-day advance notice to employees their job is terminated). I believe any notices listed are for layoffs that have ALREADY OCCURED. Future layoffs don't appear in the report. And WD may not need to report layoffs that involve less than 50 people. So, from the posted WARN notices, the large layoffs in California that WD has reported to the State are (from my reading): 4/20/15: 115 IRVINE lay offs; 8/21/15: IRVINE 81, MOUNTAIN VIEW 56; 10/13/15: FREMONT 109, SAN JOSE 2; 4/15/16: SAN JOSE 71. Future large layoffs will appear after the fact in future reports. http://www.edd.ca.gov/jobs_and_training/Layoff_Services_WARN.htm

The California EDD website shows San Jose will lay off 71 people between 4/14 to 6/17. Did that happen already in San Jose?

Employees need to realize that you are responsible for your own career path and not get pigeon-holed at WD. I started my engr career in the mid-2000s and one day I saw a SSD job posting in the break room for 2-5 years of experience and it paid a handsome 6-figure salary start. Right then and there, I knew I was in the right industry but the wrong organization. I needed to be in SSD and not spinning rust. But it took me 5 years to build up enough courage to walk away from great coworkers and friends. Fast forward almost 10 years later, I have worked at four companies and now at one of the leading SSD companies (who is vertically integrated).

I am am immigrant in America but I know, there is no such thing as career loyalty. You are only hurting yourself if you do not secure your own future. And to do that, you need to the willingness to learn new technologies and take risks. Otherwise, 20-years in, you will be obsolete, too specialized and overcompensated, and nobody, not even competitors will want to pay for your skillsets when H1-Bs are doing the same thing for half the price.

@1snk many of us have skills that are fairly unique and tied to what we do here, so transitioning will be extremely hard due to many of having niche skills. when it comes to locations, it gets even harder.

There are people who are heavily depending on current jobs. It's not easy for them to hunt another job because of the location, skill sets, ages & family issues.

It is what it is. Does it matter how many people are affected if you lose your job. Look forward. Nothing ever got solved by worrying. Get another job if you are so concerned. All the best of luck to everyone.

WD+HGST world wide employee number is 76.4k. US based employee is significantly below 10%. The largest portion of 76.4k is factory operation.

Because there are 120,000 employees (WD+HGST ) worldwide so there is at least 10 percent in the us IF NOT MORE, get it?!

How do you come up with 12000 employee in US?

At the peak of operation, HGST has about 3000 in San Jose. Assuming WD has similar number in US, the total is ~ 6000 before the shrink during the last two years. The current number if one have to guess might be less than 5000. Different opinion or insights are welcome.

How many US based employee does WD have? If one throws minus 4K to it as some thread alluded to, how many will be left to continue operation.
