IBM sent the layoff letter on March 31, a day after The Register reported that the company would be going through a fresh round of layoffs in the United States and Europe.
There's been a steady decline in IBM employment in Silicon Valley* — according to Business Journal research, the number of full-time equivalent workers employed locally declined from 6,650 in 2008 to 4,000 in 2014. The company reported a total Silicon Valley employee headcount of 3,500 people in 2015.
IBM has a long history in San Jose, first opening an office in 1952. IBM's presence in the South Bay has steadily decreased over the years as the company has moved away from hardware to software and services.
Both the Bailey and Almaden campuses are relatively isolated, and with tech companies increasingly preferring more urban environments, the future of both locations is unclear. IBM did not respond to request for comment.
