Advice to Managers: Be Soft, Not Harsh

When WD laid me off, the manager seemed harsh and cold. Here's a better approach

"Unfortunately, when many department managers are faced with the gruesome task of telling people their jobs are being eliminated, they react in the worst possible way.

They become formal and all-business just when they should soften. These are people you’re about to dismiss, and not only that, they’re the best of the crop your company got to interview a few months or a few years ago when you hired them. They are valued collaborators, part of your culture and part of your brand. You speak for yourself and for your employer when you deliver bad news, and news of a reduction in force is about the worst news a manager can deliver." http://www.forbes.com/sites/lizryan/2014/05/29/how-to-lay-people-off-and-stay-human/#cb7f3086a958

Another reason for managers to be as kind as possible when laying someone off: WSJ says it can take a couple of years for some to get over it: https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887324354704578635900864791348#=

I think a union needs to take place to protect employees. Public companies such as this are getting away with treating people badly and not providing a great severance package. One week per year worked? So if you spent about 10 years of your life at WD, your pay will be 10 weeks if you are in the last tear equals 2.5 months for 10 years? Is that fair? I think not. Obviously Directors and above get a better severance package and I do not understand why, the director as well as the regular staff worked for WD, gave the same amount of performance and contribution. But let the board of directors continue to approve the enormous salary and bonuses to the Executive team.

WD needs to obtain a Union and fast.

@1ksj this is #true and #gold

Look, they're going to lay people off. That's not going to change. But what the managers can control is what they say in the layoff meeting. What words they use. What their body language says. The message should be, "we really value your contributions. honestly. and we're really sorry to do this. it's only b/c we have to. believe it or not, this is really hard on us." My managers were the opposite: cold, glared at me, made it sound like it was my fault. Never once mentioned that every single written review I ever got was above target. Seized my badge, kicked me out onto the sidewalk. That's what I'm asking WD management to not let happen to anyone again.

Actually managers told me I was laid off. Then led me to a room with an HR person who gave me papers. Then the manager came back and said to hurry up. So b/c of their rush I left the building immediately. I came back next day to get my stuff. BTW they shut down my WD email the same day. My friend at another big Irvine company - Edwards - said they let her keep coming in for awhile to look for a new job, etc.

It sounds rough. After your manager seized your badge, did you get a chance to retrieve your personal belongings? Or security just escorted you exit the building?

And any attorney who says a manager in a layoff MUST be distant and cold in a layoff meeting is stupid. My relative is a high-level attorney who says that's just not true.

There is no humanity. This is business. If you want protection, you could unionize.

Managers/HR are just following directives from the lawyers.

On the contrary this is one of the best posts in this forum - it is time that management shows that they do have a humane side to them. I hope all managers follow this.
