Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Staples Getting It Together

Looks like Staples is making all the right moves for their customers and employees: Adding an great deal of payroll to retail stores, closing a small amount of under performing stores, cutting costs in other areas. This will equate to better service, much needed sales, satisfied customers, and happy employees. Kudos to Staples for making the right changes.

This company is sinking ..... fast. This is simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic (again) while the execs loot anything they can get their hands on and load it into their personal lifeboats.

No Kudos needed or deserved.....

" So everyone is ok with firing people who dedicated themselves to the stores "

I am certainly not Ok with it. I have a lawsuit pending and plan to rake my old GM and DM and even RVP through the mud.

The OP is probably some idiot hired from a phone carrier store and got through the interviews by bragging about how many phones they could help Staples sell. He obviously has no clue what is really going on.

Is there a list of T2 stores that lost their ops mgrs? Same happened to me. Was let go in fAll from T2. Years of service all great. Suddenly bad performance, visits everyday from DM when I accomplished all the tasks the DM wanted (which was busy work) change mind next day and have to redo or put all back. Run me in circles and write me up. So everyone is ok with firing people who dedicated themselves to the stores and their employee. Ruining their lives, giving them no severance, breaking down their self esteem, causing major depression in most cases. Having to answer why you were let go when you can't really explain in yourself. This all effects you personal life, you marriage, your kids, having to think everyday if your gonna have to sell your house and loose everything you spent your whole life working for. Telling your kids they can't do things with their friends because you no longer have health insurance to cover them. You all think the stress was bad while we were working there, well our stress is not over. And you want us to believe that because they hired unqualified persons for less pay to replace us, and gave some stores what they already should have had makes this company great. Your wrong on so many levels. If they get away with it once, they'll do it again. It's just a matter of time. they did not do it for your Benifit, they did it to try to and sugar coat what they did. It's just the top layer. What's underneath will make everyone sick.

I was an Ops manager in a T2 until I was fired in the fall for "performance". 12+ years of good evals wiped out in 6 months.

I just found out the position in the last store I was in was eliminated. Obvious attempt to simply avoid paying severance. I was already talking to a lawyer and she was preparing to file. She is going to love this. Looking into ways of naming the GM and DM in the lawsuit personally for malice.

The increased hours only impact 220 stores that move from tier four to the low end of the standard grouping. The high end tier 2 stores pay for it. 75 ops managers losing their jobs from tier 2. Hours reduction for the top end of the standard group 4.5M-6M of 50 - 100 hours a week. Bottom end of the top group have an hours decrease down to current top end tier 2 stores. No investment of hours, just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Stores have no hours to start with - so double nothing is STILL nothing.

"So ...sense you seem like either an insider or a shill..... please explain why it took all this time for a company with a CEO that has a Harvard MBA to make all these "positive changes"? "

Because the stock is in the shitter and that Harvard MBA CEO is going to get kicked to the curb unless he pulls a rabbit out of his ass.

Wow..... going by the number of BS posts here today It looks like the GM meetings were all about going to thelayoff/staples and telling everyone to drink the Kool-Aid.

Otis' schedule -

Sat - praise Staples on TheLayoff

Sunday - Reddit/r/staples

Monday - Make fake reviews on Glassdoor to counter all the negative ones. "Ron deserves more than a 46% approval rate"

Tuesday - Go back to Philly - make a GM cry, get cheesesteaks.

Let's look at the situation....

Staples lays off about 500 people from Framingham and other offices in Jan. - won't acknowledge the layoffs or state the number of people affected.

Staples lays off many LP managers in Feb.

Staples honks their horn as much as possible about adding a meager amount of hours back to stores - which STILL does not bring stores up the staffing levels pre 2013 restructuring.

Summary - Framingham and field support positions being bloated and redundant was always well known and stores not having enough payroll was as clear as day. Any 17 year old new hire could see that and it has been posted many times here and on Reddit for YEARS.... Why does Staples need Ron when as 17 year old can see what he can't.... and if he could why didn't he act on it earlier?????

I'm in agreement with OP.

  • I have already seen positive feedback from store staff about the payroll boost on other forums. Someone must be happy.

So ...sense you seem like either an insider or a shill..... please explain why it took all this time for a company with a CEO that has a Harvard MBA to make all these "positive changes"?

Staples earned all the negativity by shitting all over stores and making them impossible to run, then blaming the victims and driving good, dedicated people out because someone felt they earned to much.

"All the right moves" yeah... right.....

Are they going to rehire (and give backpay?) all the managers they drove out for "poor performance" because they could not perform without staff?

It is going to take a lot more than these proposed changes to fix stores. Staples drove many good managers out and hired trash in their place.

The new structure and added resources are meant to simplify the transition of the merger once it occurs. I do believe that this level of support for the stores does allow for immediate improvement. The only ones who will not see improvement are the ones who continue to make excuses.

This sounds like a corporate sponsored message..... I hope it was meant sarcastically.

I will admit that adding a ft sup position to stores is good, but the rumors of hour cuts to T1 stores is stupid.

Furthermore the proposed changes do not make for "happy employees". Staples has shit all over their employees for years. To much for one small reversal to fix. Until I see otherwise, there is still not enough payroll to properly assist customers and complete tasks.

If you want "happy" store staff, start with getting rid of Otis and some of the more belligerent RVPs and DMs. Vinnie Servello needs to go ASAP! If Staples is reluctant to part with these "retail geniuses" then at least force them to start being more personable on visits. They all have VERY BAD reputations for targeting people and just being outright evil during visits.

From what I am hearing, if it's true, it is a SMALL step in the right direction, but unworthy of praise.

Agreed. I would expect a lot more positivity on sites like this now that these structure changes (especially the extra payroll) have been made. These changes occurred simply to benefit the employees and the customers.
