Thread regarding Marathon Oil Corp. layoffs

Rankings. What's yours?

Everyone I talk to is in the bottom two tiers. Is HR placing most in bottom two to rob them off bonuses/self-respect? Any tier 20s out there that you know of?

"It may work in a large corporation like Exxon but not with Marathon where there's so few people."

Agreed. How do they justify ranking you against people that aren't doing the same job?

Being tier 1 doesn't make you safe from being laid off.. several tier 1's i know of were let to last few rounds..

No one is going to tell you they are tier 1.

The TAP is for specific events. Releasing someone for low performance is not one of these events.

You know... it's actually not HR who decides the ratings for employees, it's the representing managers. Perhaps your representing manager just didn't represent you well?

G7kCCHK-1use. I know how percentages work, I just don't trust that HR does what is says it does.

OP, perhaps you don't know how percentages work? It's mathematically difficult to place the majority of employees in the lower 40%... It wouldn't be the lower 40% at that point, would it?

Yes, there are T20s out there... About 20% of employees. Sure, it sucks landing in the two lower tiers, but it's best to move on; either emotionally, companies, or both. I haven't decided myself whether to move on both ways, but I've accepted where I fell. Getting angry won't change the outcome.

The post stating lower performing employees could be released under the TAP may have been implying employee(s) with low ratings could be released with no legal recourse available (but nothing in the TAP states it). Texas is a right to work state and if Marathon fires someone with a low rating the ranking would probably be enough to support Marathon not paying a TAP in court,

It is surprising so many employees received low ratings. Maybe IT has started reporting employees who stream Netflix on their work computers? Not good as March Madness is just around the corner.

There is nothing in the April 1, 2015 TAP stating those in the lower tier is not eligible to receive the benefit.

This ranking system makes it clear that the best way to advance my situation is to find subtle yet effective ways to impede the progress of others. Or was that not the lesson you intended to impart, Deanna?

Bottom 10 = Layoff with NO SEVERANCE. This was stated in the revised TAP after the February 2015 RIF. Many employees will be going out like the plants last year. Good Luck!

Bottom 10. But was told that my results were outstanding! How does that work?

Forced ranking = bad for morale and less team work.. There will always be people in the bottom two tiers... It may work in a large corporation like Exxon but not with Marathon where there's so few people.
