How many geologists did they have before and after the layoff?
There were also a lot who were WARN'ed in areas being divested but aren't allowed to be released until after the divestiture is over. Basically they have to keep coming to work for a couple more months for the company that has already told them they're laid off.

Hager can only climax when his mini-tower is in a georectum. He has to keep them around or he gets frustrated.
The engineers got let go cause the wear their rectums on the outside.
Hager needs the geologists to evaluate properties for divestment Once he is finished with divestment they too will be let go. He does not care about the future of Devon. He cares about reducing it's size and making it lean so it's an attractive target for a larger company. This will ensure his survival. Everyone else can go to hell.
