I've been in grade for something like thirteen years. I'm kind of embarrassed about it but managers keep assuring me it's really not an issue. I generally perform at the next level up, but I acknowledge that when promo money is available there's someone else on the team more deserving. So, does this mean I'm accidentally playing the game well? That I'm ridiculously lucky? Or that I'm doomed?
I only worry because a) I've put myself into a financially difficult position, b) I don't live near Silicon Valley where the jobs allegedly are, and c) everyone says white engineers over fifty never get hired. If I could just retire, I would, but ha ha.
