Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Hats Off to Devon for executing the layoff in as dignified a manner as possible

As much as I hated that it was happening, they sent real people to let everyone know about their status. No emails or letters. People were given time to say goodbye to friends and send farewell emails before having to leave, like they were family, not suspected criminals. They had a whole security team and visual barriers guarding all of the people who were unfortunate enough to be let go from the press seeking to collect their tears for national attention on the news. They honored the WARN Act 2 months of notice or PAY in this case before the pretty generous severance kicks in even though their severance more than covered the Warn provision without paying both. Nobody likes to be laid off, but the company was actually very classy about it. Oil is $30 when it was $110. What can you do? I wish everyone who was let go all the best. Good luck to all of you.

To 1rwc, not bullshit. They just did 5-10 people at a time and have been doing so for almost a year with the exception of the IT department (that was larger). They reason they did it that was was exactly that-most people would not know or notice and they would not receive bad press.

I was treated respectfully and given a very generous severance... Enough to not work for two years if I don't want to. No company owes you anything except to let you know what's going on which they did. Devon paid us all well and we were fortunate enough to work in the industry during the good times. Now it's back to reality unless you invested your money wisely. Good luck all

To 1xck, bullshit. Tony Vaughn and his team laid off 2 divisions in Houston in 2009-10. He and his team executed the most humane and professional RIF I have seen in my career. Tony controlled the process. #neverworkforacompanywithanHRdepartment.

Well they have had all year to practice. Many do not know that layoffs started in March of last year. They did not let us say goodbye and when people asked why they were being laid off they informed you that it wasn't a layoff- your job had been eliminated due to restructuring. Glad they are finally learning how to treat people as they let them go but the best part is that they are finally calling it what it is. For years they have been saying that they don't lay people off-now they are being forced to act with a little of that integrity that they preach so much about.

D9M - I'm guessing you live in a universe where exactly the opposite of what really happened occurs. Two words for you. Respect and Dignity. That's what was seen in the Tower today. Clearly your universe is void of these two things. Now go troll somewhere else.

The bitterness and anger from some people is really sad. It's a for profit business. They don't owe you anything. "Boys on top" worked hard to get where they are. Devon is run by classy people. You have the opportunity here to work hard and position yourself the same way they have. Thankfully Devon isn't run by people that act like angry, filthy mouths. Think a little more positive and maybe your future will be brighter.

Well said. I was laid off earlier this week and while the whole ordeal, and for lack of better terms-sucked, we where allowed time to say good bye. We were not patted down or treated poorly. We were not forced into signing anything. In fact we were encouraged to take our time. So please keep your mouth shut you internet trolls and put your energy else where.

Obviously you are gloating because you kept your job. Must be nice to judge everyone from your ivory tower. No worries, you'll get yours next round, then see how it feels to get raped on the way out the front door. It's blood-sucking limp-dicked pussy's like you that drive a good company to the ground. When you go to sleep tonight, remember that moment.

The real truth is the people let go were coerced and threatened into signing agreements to receive their tiny severances. Security searched them before they could leave, often confiscating "suspect" personal belongings. Keeping people from the news was just a ploy to limit bad press and exposure for a company that throws hard-working employees out like trash when they're done with them. Remember your right to sue regardless of what they forced you to sign: Think about the work related illnesses of stress and anxiety; the whistler-blower angle for those who have spoken up; and of course you have a right to claim anti-semanticism for Devon's Nazi-like behavior.

Unlike the 2009 Devon layoff when you were excorted out and a week later had to pick up your stuff from the loading dock.

Now that you lost your oil job, why don't you volunteer your time to help the poor in urban areas destroyed by decades of pollution, like Flint. Maybe you could use your experience in oil to campaign for social and environmental justice, like Bernie Sanders. Just a thought to help you re-establish yourself.

Should have banked more $$ when ripping everyone off in prior years. Sad for the economy of OKC. $3.50/gal of gas was ridiculous. Bet boys on top didn't lose their jobs, probably got huge bonuses. Karma
