Layoffs are not the only problem at HP – how about discouraging telecommuting?

Layoffs are not the only problem – discouraging telecommuting is a huge issue right now. For example, having a requirement that folks are within 100 miles from the office and to come to office every day – that’s ‘discouraging’.

I personally felt this on my skin as I lost a couple of folks and my team lead due to the requirement. Keep in mind that this just one of the issues. The mood is fairly bad too, we know that 10s of thousands will be let go – so people are expecting it. Finally, my last rant is on wages – there are no raises lately (at least during last 7 years – you may get a little bit but that does not even cover inflation) – they may hire you with a good wage but you can forget any raises.

Hey, lets go backwards 30-40 years, when we had no dial up modems. Problem at night, no issue, customers can wait, take 1.5 hours to drive 100 miles to fix issue.

People who work from home work more than those in the office. I frequently work extra hours because when I think of a solution to a problem I do it right away from home. People who work at home are more refreshed and relaxed because they don't have to fight traffic every day.

You are making global statements about localized situations. If you haven't received an increase in 7 years you should be looking at if YOUR performance warranted a raise. telecommuting is a priveledge NOT a right. If the mood is dark, what are YOU doing to turn it around?

People can slack being telecommuters or they can slack "collaborating " in the office. That is more a character issue than a business one. If they can send jobs offshore, they can lighten up on the back to office crap.

Telecommuting is a hit or miss and not for everyone. Some folks have discipline and they are available all the time but some HP folks who work remote are so hard to contact it totally does not make sense to keep them. If I ping you I want an instant response, not a 24 hour delayed ping back
