Over 50 layoffs - age discrimination - potential legal issues

I noticed that most people I know who were let go today were over 50, do you think that there is a potential legal situation here? I am sure there are many attorneys who would take a case like this on a contingency basis. I really have no horse in this game but wanted to see what other folks thought.

Four folks on my team laid off today, they were the highest paid. All were older. Not age discrimination; pay discrimination. But that's what was needed to keep Devon afloat. Get over it.

First off, today's layoff was supervisory personnel -- supervisors through VP's. Those position are, of course, usually the older and higher paid group. Tomorrow will be the real layoff of the non-supervisory personnel (aka the peons, the actual workers). And yes, engineering and geology have been and will be hard hit. Obviously. Why would they need them when there's no drilling? The layoffs are expected to be highest in the low producing areas, which was proven true today, and I'm sure will be again tomorrow, not age or salary level. Devon has been top heavy with too many manager level and needed to curtail it even before this. As for Devon being in trouble, of course they are, as are ALL oil and gas companies. Many of them, especially the larger companies have already been doing this by the thousands. Devon has worked hard at surviving and taking care of their people the best they can. You want somebody to blame? Look to OPEC, the Arab oil controlling part of the world. They're good and pissed off because America has been drilling and becoming less and less dependent on their oil. They have caused this disaster by flooding the market to drive the price of oil down. Their goal is to crush America and they are succeeding. I just heard OPEC has promised to freeze their production at its current level IF and ONLY IF the rest of world promises to do the same. Result of that? Keep America from recovering. Prevent us from being able to produce enough to not be subject to their control.

Black lives matter.. Go block traffic on I-40.. This aggression will not stand.. Old people are slow and smelly.. Loot and burn your community like Ferguson.. Better to burn out than to fade away.. The check is in the mail.. And when they come for, look that sucker crooked in the eye.. Reach down deep for the strength to hold your favorite head up and spit back in their face.. God save the queen!

Not age discrimination. Older people are laid off due to hire salaries which would at burden to the company.

Also, you can't sign away legally protected rights. Meaning if this were discrimination you'd still have the right to file a discrimination claim. But this wouldn't be discrimination so don't waste your time.

Welcome to the club. I was laid off in Sept due to age discrimination. Did they ask you to sign a waiver? Don't sign it if you have plans to sue them. If you sign it basically you waive your rights to sue them for ANY reason. I went ahead and signed it to get my 8 weeks severance. But I didn't think I'd be out this long. The good news is....you get to sleep in tomorrow and not have to worry about that nasty commute anymore. The bad news is the market sucks, especially for over 40 types. Show only the last 15 years, don't show your graduation date from college. Age discrimination is alive and well.....

Most of the older ones ARE the experienced ones

Older people generally make higher wages; therefore slashing more dollars probably means slashing more jobs for more experienced personnel.

You stand no chance here - really Devon is having business issues and trying to reduce payroll, this cannot be a legal situation unless someone was terminated strictly because they were old but that did not take place as they laid off people of all ages
