Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

Put things into perspective - This is not the worst that can happen

My two cents, not trying to preach, just sharing my thoughts... Please read if you are interested...

I have had friends losing their lives over the past months. Understand that the problem looks bigger when you stare at it long enough, and tunnel vision can make you lose the bigger picture.

While going through rough rides like this, don't lose traction of the vital values in life. Understand why you have a job in the first place, you have certain values in life, don't lose them nor serve the other way round. It is frustrating to have worries like that, you are not alone, and bear in mind, somethings are not for sale.

We question the economy later, we question why we are serving the system rather than to have to system serve us, but for now, we question why we are so willing to lose ourselves to the system so readily. Don't lose focus on the important things in life.

The job is merely a subset, and be ready to expand your horizon. Embrace change and the unfamiliar. Make allies not enemies. Be ready for the paradigm shift.

In my experience with other companies, they tell you how many when they tell you who is going, and not before (with rare exception). Seriously - the fact that there will be layoffs soon gives everyone a heads up to update their resumes. For example, Chaparral axed 35% of their office staff, and while there were rumors of impending layoffs, they never confirmed anything ahead of time. Savvy people knew that layoffs had to be coming, but management never said a damn word ahead of time.

I'm a laid off Chesapecker. Feeling the pain for all those at Devon who now have to nervously wait for that email that says "meet in the conference room". They should have had the common decency to announce the number of people involved. You poor people have no idea whether its 250 or 1,200 job lost which is really unfortunate. At least CHK announced numbers each time.
