Thread regarding HP (Hewlett-Packard) layoffs

"senior employees are too expensive" mantra

The strange part is after 28 years with the company, and having a performance ranking of P+ I was sitting at the very bottom of Pay Band 1. You reiterated what management says but the truth ( I'm sure you know this) is that many senior folks are not "expensive" at all. I'm pointing this out because the company uses the "senior employees are too expensive" mantra too often when it's simply not true. Red Badge - Old HP Canada.

When I was at HP, I worked with a lot of staff in Guadalajara and found them to be amazing--smart, dedicated and efficient. I don't blame them for anything. However, offshore workers shouldn't kid themselves. When they get older and more expensive, they'll get the boot, too. And most of their countries lack a good support system for the unemployed. So before you make fun of out-of-work Americans, imagine yourself kicked to the curb in 5 years. HP has no loyalty. You may be cheaper than Americans, but there will always be someone somewhere else cheaper than you.

As a previous front line engineer, actually touching customer cloth on a daily basis, it's just a matter of time when customers pull the plug on the "off shored" expensive services HP is selling for a premium price. HP is expensive, always has been, but and customers justified the cost in part due to their local resources. Customer aren't dumb, they'll take their business elsewhere. It's already happening with the current focus on "retiring" field personel. Once you start cutting where the rubber hits the road, things must be bad are the optics. Remote resouces have no "skin" in the game as remote resources are sliced and diced to meet operating costs.

Well as much as l would like to avoid in-fighting between staff, l find it odd that whenever a Manila or Indian posts (self identified by: more jobs for us, sucks to be you Americans etc) they are always unnecessarily obnoxious. Odd given people here blame the leadership and not workers from these countries.

If you really are from a legitimate "offshore/bestshore/oneshore" location you don't do yourself or your colleagues any favours.

Just to add fuel to the fire, working in operations (HPES) l have found the Manila staff friendly, polite and always willing to help. The Indian operations staff on the other hand ...

They'll be lucky to get any good early career employees with the way things are going. They'll be forced to hire subpar college students - everyone else in the industry knows to stay away.

Major layoffs today and this week happening in Plano. Don't know about other locations. Agree with the person that says these layoffs are down to the marrow. Get ready for a huge mess!

Possibly.. Although there are ample spreadsheet monkeys around, crunching the total cost of the

older employee (salary+benefits+cost of business+whatever it is today). With dropping revenues and most importantly, profit, likely a rolling layoff plan for 2016. Qtr by qtr. Very short sighted moves to make the numbers look good. Smoke and mirrors. They're down to the marrow now, so it will be

interesting to watch from the outside.
