Advise for some of you: In this industry, plan to switch every 4-5 years.

I'm the poster of this link. Look, I know some people have been at this gig for quite a while. And thus, you might have been insulated from the cycles in this industry. But cycles exist, and either they get you with your pants down (and your ass kissing the wind), or you ride the cycles. These cycles always come, 4 to 5 years. If you are past your 6th year on the same company, you are on borrowed time. This doesn't mean jumping around, but to develop the mindset that this is a reality (a reality for the last 20 years.) Develop your network, develop your skills, be willing to do lateral moves, even if for a bit less money or lesser benefits. Better to switch gears ON YOUR OWN, than to have bean counters switching the gears on you when you are least prepared.
