Thread regarding Devon Energy Corp. layoffs

I kind of want to get laid off...

I've made enough money to last like 10 years and getting up at 6 sucks.

I was laid off recently. When did Bob Barker leave The Price is Right? That surprised me.

@hwx- people are afraid to volunteer out of fear it will be taken the wrong way and they'll get fired...I wish Devon would have listed proper protocol for those who want to volunteer.

Post by evo - "it's boring as hell"

If you want to sacrifice for those who may need a job, then VOLUNTEER!

I didn't even say I wanted to give up my job for others. I could care less about peoples' kids/debt. I just want the severance.

@qrg- that was a pretty bold statement. None of us said we're bored. We said we're willing to give up our jobs for people who need theirs more because we have less debt, less kids, and decent nest eggs. Learn too read

Finally someone who saves their money. I thought I was the only one. You have me beat though, according to my calcs I have enough to last 7 maybe 8 years. I got my Obamacare, I'm good. But I'm ready to get back to work. I love my profession, I just don't love some of the brutal corporate games. It seems so personal. Because I kick ass at what I do and I know it. Some bosses can't handle someone who is smarter than them I guess.

Definitely not a lazy new hire. I'm smart enough to know that the oil industry isn't the only industry in the world. I've worked in several diverse engineering capacities and industries during my career. This is a job, there will be others... You will get another job.

I'm also smart enough to know that there is no such thing as company commitment. This is business, you and the company owe each other nothing other than work in exchange for compensation. Any company will you lay you off in a second if business calls for it. Company commitment to its employees is a lie told during good times, you ought to know that by now.

Okay, so will those of you that are bored and don't want to go to work anymore please reveal your names? We'll make sure HR knows how you feel and you won't have to volunteer. Must be some of the lazy young new hires that don't have a clue what a career and commitment to a company is all about. Good riddance!

Why are you waiting to be asked to volunteer? Just do it!

I'm at the top of volunteer list in my group, and I understand most departments have them.

I dont think anyone is suggesting people without families volunteer to be let go. I think people with the means to sustain themselves for a year or two are tempted to jump ship because we are in for some rough sailing until oil prices come back.

Hunger games baby. Only one survives from each floor.

The people who try and suggest that people without a family or kids to support should be more willing to sacrifice themselves to the layoff in some form of misguided altruism can kiss off. Those of us in that situation are often the ones sacrificing more time to work late, make trips out to the field, etc and work just as hard if not harder than anyone else. Since they didn't offer to accept any volunteers, personal lives outside of the office should have no impact on who gets cut. Any decision should be performance based only.

I wish they would have asked for volunteers also because I would have gladly put my name in the pot. I don't have any debt, nor any children.

I feel the same way, but I dont think its right to give up on your chosen career path so easily, especially if you truly want to be an energy professional. Dont let one bust break you and push you to living in a van down by the river, or worse, working for the federal government.

Congrats on being in that position. Take advantage of it! Go spend a year sitting on a beach, soaking up some sun. Listen to some Jimmy Buffett (or pick your poison). Drown some bait. Or, go bohemian. Write. Paint. Take some theater classes. Learn to play the Zither. The world is your oyster. Have fun.

I'm in the same boat. I feel bad for people who just had a kid. I don't not feel bad for the people who just bought a house, car or boat (the writing was on the wall).

Waking up at 6 to go sit at a desk and stare at a computer screen all day does get old after awhile. It's great pay, but God it's boring as hell. Only interesting part of the job is who in the tower knocked up who.

You know I've had the same thoughts. I've saved up a nice stack and I hate getting up in the mornings. I don't have a family and no one depends on me, so why do I do this everyday?

If you don't get laid off in this first round then you have the privilege of living in constant fear of being laid off in later rounds. So basically the situation you're in now but just strung out for a couple more years.

If they would have asked for volunteers I probably would have said yes. With the severance package I could take a nice 2 month vacation in some remote part of the world and just look for a job in some other field when I got back. You'd probably even come out ahead in the end.

Oh well.
