Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM / Transfer from Team to Team

I joined a few months ago as an engineer. I am in SWG NA and I want to get out of there as soon as possible. Long story short, I hate my manager. I'd like to do something different - I found a group/team where I want to transfer too, they are cool with it, the manager will support it and he has a spot for me. My target group also had layoffs a few months ago, all is good now but that's also a concern for me...

I got a 2+ on this year's PBCs, I was told that I'll likely be promoted. I am concerned that by transferring I'll cause a bit of backlash, that they may prevent me from transferring or they may mess up my promo prospects. What would you suggest here?

Before you apply, you have to MAKE SURE that the new manager is committed to hiring you. Only once you have that commitment should proceed and you tell your manager you'd like to apply to the new job. You may not think your manager would be so petty as to screw with your career, but there are many, many that will. I can almost guarantee if the new job were to fall through, you won't be getting that promotion or a 2+ next year.

Most managers are cool and will look after you - BUT - some of them are vile and plain evil, just be careful whatever you do...

If the new position is beneath or the same as your current manager then go for it. The new position will be a great career move.

If the new position is above your current manager then I would hesitate. People want you to do well in life but they don't want you getting ahead of them. Your current manager might sabotage your chances because of jealousy and envy.

There is a 2 year wait period before you can transfer, it used to be 12 months, but most groups are at 2 years now - are you OK there?

I would just go and talk to the manager - be frank and respectful. Tell him that you are here to support IBM, group and him/her. You'll do everything needed but that you'd like to develop in different direction... Do not worry about layoffs, they happen all the time, you cannot change anything there.

In addition to advice from prior reply, you should also verify there is a current job posting on the internal jobs website for the position you are interested in and there are no restrictions (eg candidates must be from within same business unit).

You need to be 100% sure that the new manager is committed to bringing you on - people say weird things and take statements lightly. Only once you have that commitment should you tell your manager you want to apply to the new job, explain the reasons, the drive. You may not think your current manager would be so petty as to screw with your career, but there are many out there that will gladly do so. I can, with a great degree of certainity, tell you that if the new job were to fall through, you will not be getting that promotion or a 2+ next year.
