Can we extrapolate layoff numbers here? For example, 150K per resource, that's 5.6K laid off, or 10% of the work force. at 75K per resource, we are talking about 11 thousand EMC folks laid off?
Not sure if my math is right here, but either way you slice and dice it it's massive, I am talking 5 or 10 thousands of people here which is a pretty scary prospect

All the schmucks from director and levels up should be fired first. That would cover up the 850 mil cost cutting and a lot of 80 grand resources can be spared.
The industry standard is $100,000 per an employee terminated, you can make an assumption that at least $500M will go against layoffs, that gives you about 5,000 to be laid off...

@ejw is correct, I'd go with maybe 200M and 250K per head, that will give you about 1K. But wait, we already cut 1K in January 2016 and this thing will be a year long exercise. I'd work things in a reverse direction - I'd say they will cut 15K, and whatever cost they incur they will charge it off. Well done EMC, layoffs well planed.

You are assuming the entire $850m in cost reductions is coming from layoffs which is an incorrect assumption. There are cap-ex and op-ex reductions too. Some of the reduction is just cutting unfilled headcount. Also, you're way off on the burdened headcount cost - I'd say somewhere between $250-$300K is a more accurate figure.
