Thread regarding VMware Inc. layoffs

Without VMware, the world would not have been where it is today

The business side of VMware sucks, I agree, they are making bad decisions left and right, but you have to understand that the business side and the technology side are NOT the same.

VMware has a HUGE number of exceptionally talented engineers, who still work there today to solve issues and advance the technology.

Remember that without VMware, the world would not have been where it is today

I've been a VMware user, admin and architect since 2006. I have never worked for VMware, though I have interviewed with their PS division and turned down a job offer from them. I can also tell you that EMC and their 'big iron' and 'sales first' mentality is what is killing / has killed VMware. Once the VMware purchase was made, and all the arrogant little schmucks from EMC were brought over - it killed the environment and the push for innovation at VMware. VMware no longer cares about the quality of the software they put out. It has more bugs in it than Windows, but again, that (IMO) is due to the sales-push from the EMC-style Pay first, fix-later-marketing. Plain as day, EMC killed this company.

We would not have the industrial revolution, automobile and railways, and all the other economic prosperity we enjoy without the dinosaurs. Thanks to Dinosaurs for leaving behind lots of oil.

I digress, thanks to VMware indeed (when DG was around).

Its good to share an opinion but it needs to have some inputs how the opinion you r sharin can be executed. Every company goes thru a bad phase. How it overcomes that situation is important. VMware was in a situation like this before where it was not doing good and later it came up as a virtual giant. With that vmware has the experience of arising from situations as this. Its just a matter of time. You all need to wait and watch. And if you can't suggest any good to the company then please do not comment on the situation like a nut.

I am sure you all would have looked up to vmware in one way or the other and have jobs becoz of vmware technology. Be greatful!

Its nice to be important but its important to be nice !!

I agree with the bit about the talent, at least in some groups. I am a former employee and some of the folks in our group were the smartest programmers I've known, and were fanatically devoted to correctness and performance in the core of the virtualization products. But outside this tiny group, the company seemed to be growing way too quickly and chaotically, and it felt like we were trying to save the Titanic by tuning the engine.

Banking on NSX as the differentiator? Core products mature? Pat's gone off his rockers!

well, might be true in the 90s. Certainly not true now, all the old timers still working here are mostly dinosaur who refuse to come out of their low-level shells, as if Amazon got where it is now by having some dinosaurs dictating everyone checking in code might explain and justify how 1 bytes of size increase.

Simply put, you don't win in cloud by being an ass about techs that were hot when Jobs was still young and good-looking.

I'd tend to think firing off some of these left-over "leaders" would help VMware, not by lot but it will help

VMware is losing its technology leadership position. In compute, the virtualization space is being disrupted by container technology (Docker etc). In Storage, VMware is behind Nutanix. In networking, VMware faces stiff compitition from Cisco and others.

In difficult times VMware has always bounced back on the strength of its technology leadership. This time things look different.

Full Disclosure: I am a former vmware employee. I was not layed-off/terminated. I do not currently work for Docker, Nutanix, Cisco or any company that directly competes with VMware. I own VMware shares.

Basically, VMware is a tech company that has just lost it's mind. From inept leadership to always being dominated by EMC to now being in the clutches of Dell, to upstarts, startups and wannabe growth leaders snapping at it's heels, times could not be worse.

Add to that a confusing and complex product portfolio, tactless support and opaque management, can't help but feel that the glory days are long over. What we now see is a company scavenging to survive and remain relevant.

Unfortunately there are many cases that a technology inferior company wins the war against a technology superior company because the "business side" decided the outcome. Just think about VHS vs Beta and Windows vs Mac.

Yes, VMware was prominent once. But the future? Just look at VMW stock today to see what the Wall Street thinks about VMware future!
